Overview
The Mazak VORTEX e-V is a series of four double-column 5-axis machining centers with a CAT No.50, 10,000 rpm spindle, a B-axis that swings from -30° to +120° and a rotary C-axis table. Mazak lists two sizes, the VORTEX e-1250V/8 and the VORTEX e-1600V/10, each with a 2 pallet changer, and a single-pallet version of each: the VORTEX e-1250V/8S and the VORTEX e-1600V/10S.
Size is where the four part company. X travel runs from 74 in (1,880 mm) to 91 in (2,311 mm) and Y from 49 in (1,245 mm) to 63 in (1,600 mm), while Z is 53 in (1,346 mm) on every model. Table load spreads much wider, from 5,952 lb (2,700 kg) to 15,432 lb (7,000 kg). The heaviest figure is more than two and a half times the lightest, so the weight of the part and its fixture can settle the choice before the travels do.
Everything at the spindle is common to the series. Mazak's reason for the double column is top-face work on large parts: with long X and Y strokes, a face can be milled using linear positioning alone, without bringing the rotary axes into the cut. The C-axis table is turned by a direct drive motor so that it keeps up with the linear axes at 5-axis cutting feed. The control is MAZATROL SmoothAi, and Mazak shows the series in a one-level PALLETECH MANUFACTURING CELL that can grow with production volume.

Mazak's example is a one-level PALLETECH MANUFACTURING CELL, for which a starter set is the required configuration. The system can be expanded as production volume changes, different types of Mazak machine can be integrated into it, and it can be linked with peripheral equipment for long automatic runs.
