Overview
The Haas UMC-1000-P adds integrated pallet changing to the proven UMC-1000 platform, creating a 5-axis machining cell capable of unattended production. With 1,016 x 635 x 635 mm (40 x 25 x 25 in) of travel, a dual-axis trunnion table, and an automatic pallet changer, it enables shops to load the next workpiece while the current part is being machined — a fundamental requirement for lights-out and lightly-attended 5-axis production.
The spindle is the standard UMC-1000 inline direct-drive unit: 22.4 kW (30 hp) with 122 Nm (90 ft-lbf) of torque, running to 8,100 RPM standard with 12,000 and 15,000 RPM options available. The CT/BT 40 taper accepts standard tooling, with HSK-A63 available as an option for shops demanding better tool clamping rigidity.
The trunnion table carries a 635 mm (25 in) platter with a reduced pallet pool capacity of approximately 90.7 kg (200 lb) per pallet — significantly less than the standard 454 kg (1,000 lb) platter load without the pallet system. This weight reduction is necessary because the pallet changer must handle the combined weight of pallet, fixture, and workpiece during exchange. The B-axis tilts from +120 to -35 degrees and the C-axis provides full 360-degree rotation.
The 30+1 SMTC delivers 2.8-second tool-to-tool and 3.6-second chip-to-chip times. Rapids run at 22.9 m/min (900 ipm) on all axes. The NGC control manages pallet exchange, tool management, and program scheduling for multi-pallet production runs.
At approximately $200,000-$290,000 configured, the UMC-1000-P costs more than the standard UMC-1000 but enables a fundamentally different operating mode. For shops running repeat 5-axis parts in sufficient volume to justify unattended production, the pallet system transforms the UMC-1000 from a manually-loaded job shop machine into a production cell. Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Integrated pallet changer enables unattended and lightly-attended 5-axis production on the UMC-1000 platform
- 40-inch X travel and 25-inch trunnion diameter handle large 5-axis parts that exceed the UMC-750 envelope
- Load next workpiece while current part is machining — eliminates load/unload downtime on repeat work
- Same proven 30 HP spindle and 40x25x25-inch travel as the standard UMC-1000
- NGC control manages pallet scheduling and tool management for multi-part production runs
- Haas Factory Outlet support network keeps service response times predictable
Limitations
- 200 lb pallet pool capacity per pallet is severely limiting compared to the 1,000 lb standard platter load
- Pallet system adds $40,000-$60,000 over the standard UMC-1000 — requires volume to justify
- 900 ipm rapids are slower than competing 5-axis pallet machines from Makino, Hermle, and DMG Mori
- 30+1 tool capacity may be limiting for diverse multi-pallet production requiring many different cutters

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts around $200,000. With spindle upgrades, through-spindle coolant, probing, and the 50+1 toolchanger, expect $250,000-$290,000 for a production-configured machine. The P adds approximately $40,000-$60,000 over the equivalent standard UMC-1000.
02
Travel, spindle, and trunnion specs are identical. The P adds an automatic pallet changer that enables workpiece exchange without stopping the spindle. The trade-off is reduced pallet load capacity (200 lb vs 1,000 lb) and higher cost. Choose the P for repeat production; choose the standard for heavy or diverse job shop work.
03
The pallet changer must handle the combined weight of pallet, fixture, and workpiece during exchange, including at tilted trunnion positions. The 200 lb limit ensures reliable, safe pallet exchange under all conditions. For heavier workpieces, use the standard UMC-1000 without the pallet system.
04
The standard configuration includes two pallets, allowing load/unload on one while cutting on the other. This simple two-pallet system provides the core benefit — eliminating load/unload downtime — without the complexity and cost of larger pallet pool systems.
