Overview

Six metres by three, with a gantry that travels 4,400 mm (173.2 in): the Hartford HSA-636EAY is one of the large machines of the long-Y five-face line. X travel is 6,000 mm (236.2 in), the table 6,000 x 3,000 mm (236.2 x 118.1 in), the load rating 24,000 kg (52,910 lb).

At this size the workpieces tend to be single large items that cannot easily be turned over or re-fixtured: a welded machine base, a mould frame, a section of a ship engine block. Finishing such a part on five faces in one clamping removes the alignment errors that come from re-setting it, and that is the argument for a five-face machine over a three-axis one.

Hartford combines an automated switching head compartment with a vertical and horizontal tool change system, so a tool can be changed in the vertical spindle or in a mounted angular head without manual work. An automatic universal angular head is shown for the model.

The HSA-636EA has the same table with 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of Y travel. Both x36 machines get Y-axis ballscrew support as standard, and X support is standard above 5 meters. Spindle: #50, gear head at 6,000 rpm or optionally 8,000 rpm, hybrid at 10,000 rpm. Z travel: 1,000 mm, optionally 1,200 mm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 4,400 mm (173.2 in) of Y travel above a 6,000 x 3,000 mm table
  • Tool change in both vertical and horizontal spindle positions
  • 24,000 kg (52,910 lb) table load
  • X and Y ballscrew support standard

Limitations

  • 24,000 kg is only slightly more than the narrower HSA-628EAY's 23,000 kg (50,705 lb)
  • Z travel of 1,000 mm, or 1,200 mm, is short for very tall weldments
  • Fastest listed spindle is the 10,000 rpm hybrid

Best For

Large welded bases finished in one clamping Mould frames up to 6,000 x 3,000 mm Engine and compressor frame sections

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the HSA-636EAY?

The table is 6,000 x 3,000 mm (236.2 x 118.1 in) and takes 24,000 kg (52,910 lb). Travels are 6,000 mm (236.2 in) in X, 4,400 mm (173.2 in) in Y and 1,000 mm in Z, with 1,200 mm of Z optional.

02 Can tools be changed with an angular head mounted on the HSA-636EAY?

Hartford describes the automated switching head compartment as combined with a vertical and horizontal tool change system, to provide what it calls highly efficient versatile processing.

03 What is the difference between the HSA-636EAY and the HSA-636EA?

Y travel is 4,400 mm (173.2 in) on the HSA-636EAY and 3,600 mm (141.7 in) on the HSA-636EA. Table, load, spindle and magazine figures are the same.

04 What does the HSA-636EAY offer over the HSA-628EAY?

A wider table and more Y. The HSA-628EAY has a 6,000 x 2,500 mm (236.2 x 98.4 in) table, 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of Y and a 23,000 kg (50,705 lb) rating, against 3,000 mm of width, 4,400 mm of Y and 24,000 kg here.
