Overview

The Modig RigiMill MG is a moving-gantry machining center for long parts, sold in 3-, 4- or 5-axis form with X travel of up to 32,000 mm (1,260 in). Y is 1,560 mm (61 in) and Z is 820 mm (32 in) whatever the length. The maximum part is listed as 32,000 x 1,400 x 820 mm (1,260 x 55 x 32 in), length by width by height, so this is a machine for work that is long, narrow and fairly flat.

What defines a given machine is the spindle, and Modig lists two kinds. The aluminum spindle runs up to 30,000 rpm with up to 200 kW (272 hp) S1. The hard metal spindle runs 0-12,000 rpm and is rated by torque, 500-2,500 Nm (370-1,845 ft-lbs) S1. The stated removal rates show how far apart the two jobs are: 1,200 cubic inches/min (19.7 liters/min) in aluminum against 55 cubic inches/min (0.9 liter/min) in titanium. The table gives no torque for the aluminum spindle and no power for the hard metal spindle, so each has to be judged on the one figure it is given.

Tool storage is sized in steps of 50 up to 500, with HSK-A63, HSK-63/80 or HSK-A100 interfaces. A chip-to-chip change takes 14 sec, a small share of the cycle on parts of this length. X, Y and Z feed at 0-70 m/min (0-2,800 in/min) with 8 m/s² (26 ft/s²) of acceleration. The A-axis has a range of +/- 110 degrees and the C-axis +/- 360 degrees, and both turn at 360 degrees/sec.

An automatic pallet system is listed, up to 950 in (24 m). That figure is below the longest X travel of 32,000 mm (1,260 in), so confirm with Modig how the pallet system is matched to the longer machines. Listed materials are aluminum, composite, cast iron, steel and titanium. The RigiMill MT lists the same two spindle types and the same interfaces with a capacity of 100 tools, where the RigiMill MG magazine can be specified up to 500.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X travel up to 32,000 mm (1,260 in) on a moving gantry, for parts up to 32,000 x 1,400 x 820 mm (1,260 x 55 x 32 in)
  • Aluminum spindle of up to 30,000 rpm and up to 200 kW (272 hp) S1, with a stated removal rate of 1,200 cubic inches/min (19.7 liters/min) in aluminum
  • Hard metal spindle with 500-2,500 Nm (370-1,845 ft-lbs) S1 at 0-12,000 rpm for titanium and steel
  • Tool storage can be specified in steps of 50 up to 500 tools
  • Automatic pallet system listed up to 950 in (24 m)
  • Feed of 0-70 m/min (0-2,800 in/min) and 8 m/s² (26 ft/s²) acceleration on X, Y and Z

Limitations

  • Z travel is 820 mm (32 in) and part width 1,400 mm (55 in) regardless of length, so tall or wide parts do not fit
  • Tool change takes 14 sec chip to chip, which adds up on parts with many short operations
  • No torque is listed for the aluminum spindle and no power for the hard metal spindle
  • The pallet system is listed up to 950 in (24 m), short of the 1,260 in (32,000 mm) maximum X travel
  • No part weight or table load figure is given

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long a part can the RigiMill MG machine?

X travel is available up to 32,000 mm (1,260 in), and the maximum part is listed as 32,000 x 1,400 x 820 mm (1,260 x 55 x 32 in), length by width by height. Y travel is 1,560 mm (61 in) and Z travel is 820 mm (32 in). Length is the variable; width and height stay the same however long the machine is.

02 What is the difference between the aluminum spindle and the hard metal spindle?

The aluminum spindle is the high-speed one: up to 30,000 rpm and up to 200 kW (272 hp) S1. The hard metal spindle runs 0-12,000 rpm and delivers 500-2,500 Nm (370-1,845 ft-lbs) S1. Modig quotes removal rates of 1,200 cubic inches/min (19.7 liters/min) in aluminum and 55 cubic inches/min (0.9 liter/min) in titanium. Interfaces are HSK-A63, HSK-63/80 or HSK-A100; the table does not say which goes with which spindle.

03 How many tools can the RigiMill MG carry?

Capacity is specified in steps of 50 up to 500. Tool change is 14 sec, chip to chip. For comparison, the RigiMill MT is listed with 100 tools. The table gives no maximum tool length, diameter or weight, so check those against your longest and heaviest cutters.

04 Is the RigiMill MG a 5-axis machine?

It is offered as a 3-, 4- or 5-axis machine. The rotary axes are A at +/- 110 degrees and C at +/- 360 degrees, both feeding at 360 degrees/sec. Linear axes feed at 0-70 m/min (0-2,800 in/min) and accelerate at 8 m/s² (26 ft/s²).

05 Does the RigiMill MG have pallet automation?

Yes. An automatic pallet system is listed, up to 950 in (24 m). The longest X travel is 32,000 mm (1,260 in), which is more than the pallet figure, so ask Modig how pallets are handled on machines longer than 24 m.

06 Which materials does Modig list for the RigiMill MG?

Aluminum, composite, cast iron, steel and titanium. The spindle choice follows the material: the aluminum spindle with up to 30,000 rpm for light alloys, and the hard metal spindle with 500-2,500 Nm (370-1,845 ft-lbs) S1 for steel, cast iron and titanium.
