Overview
The Hurco VMX42HSRTi is a large-envelope five-axis machining center built for speed: an HSK-63A spindle to 24,000 rpm rated 37 kW (49.6 hp), travels of 1,067 mm (42 in) in X, 610 mm (24.01 in) in Y and 610 mm (24.01 in) in Z, and a 1,270 mm (50 in) × 610 mm (24.01 in) table rated for 1,360 kg (3,000 lb).
Unlike the compact five-axis machines with a small rotary platter, this one keeps a full-length table. The B axis swings +92° / -92° at 50 rpm and the C axis turns 360° at 100 rpm, so large parts and long fixtures can be tilted and indexed without moving to a smaller machine. A ±92° swing in either direction lets the tool reach slightly past horizontal on both sides of a part.
The spindle is the defining choice. At 24,000 rpm it turns twice as fast as the VMX42SRTi and VMX42SWi, but its torque is 82.9 Nm (61.2 ft-lb). The VMX42SRTi, on the same frame, runs to 12,000 rpm on CAT 40 with 36.5 kW (48 hp) and 120.2 Nm (88.7 ft-lb). So the HSRTi is aimed at high-speed surfacing of moulds, dies and aluminium structures with small ball and bull-nose tools; heavy roughing in steel is better done on the SRTi.
The 40-tool magazine changes in 2 sec, twice as fast as the 4 sec listed for the VMX42SRTi, which shortens cycles on finishing programs that call many small tools. Tools can be up to 76 mm (3 in) in diameter, 250 mm (9.8 in) long and 7 kg (15.4 lb). Spindle nose to table is listed as 3 mm (0.12 in). The machine weighs 8,400 kg (18,520 lb). It runs Hurco's WinMax control, with conversational programming as well as G-code.
