Overview

The Hurco VMX42HSRTi is the high-speed variant of Hurco's swivel-head rotary table 5-axis platform. It combines a 24,000 RPM HSK 63 spindle with a B/C swivel-head rotary table configuration, creating one of the fastest and most versatile machines in Hurco's 5-axis lineup. Where trunnion machines tilt the part, the SRT design tilts the spindle head and rotates the table — giving you full 5-axis access to large parts that won't fit on a trunnion.

Travels are 1,067 x 610 x 610 mm (42 x 24 x 24 in) with a fixed table of 1,270 x 610 mm (50 x 24 in) rated for 1,360 kg (3,000 lb). An integrated 599 mm (23.6 in) diameter rotary table handles 500 kg (1,100 lb). The B-axis swivels +/-92 degrees and the C-axis rotates 360 degrees, providing excellent angular access for complex contoured surfaces.

The 24,000 RPM HSK 63 spindle delivers 37 kW (49.6 hp) of peak power with 82.9 Nm (61.2 ft-lbs) of torque at 4,260 RPM. This is a true high-speed machining spindle — at 24K RPM, you're in diamond-finish territory for aluminum. HSK 63 face-contact toolholding maintains grip at these extreme speeds where CAT 40 tapers would loosen.

Rapids are the fastest in the VMX42 family at 45 m/min (1,771 ipm) on X/Y and 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) on Z. B-axis rapids at 50 RPM and C-axis at 100 RPM provide quick repositioning. The 40-tool ATC handles HSK 63 tooling with 76 mm max diameter and 249 mm max length.

At 8,400 kg (18,520 lb), this is a heavy machine with serious rigidity. Floor space is 4,954 x 3,772 mm (195 x 149 in) and power draw is 70 KVA. WinMax control with full simultaneous 5-axis support is standard.

New pricing runs $300,000-$400,000. This machine targets high-speed aerospace aluminum machining and precision mold work where cycle time and surface finish are paramount.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 24,000 RPM HSK 63 spindle is the fastest in Hurco's lineup, delivering diamond-quality finishes on aluminum
  • Swivel-head design provides 5-axis access to large parts that won't fit on trunnion tables
  • 1,360 kg (3,000 lb) fixed table load handles heavy workpieces that trunnion machines can't support
  • 100 RPM C-axis rapid repositioning is 4x faster than trunnion models, cutting cycle time on indexed work
  • 37 kW (49.6 hp) spindle power handles aggressive roughing despite the high-speed focus
  • 610 mm Z-axis travel provides extra clearance for tall parts and long-reach tooling

Limitations

  • 70 KVA power requirement is substantial and may require dedicated electrical service
  • $300-400K pricing approaches premium European 5-axis territory from Hermle and GF Machining
  • 82.9 Nm torque at 4,260 RPM limits heavy roughing in steel — this is primarily an aluminum machine
  • HSK 63 tooling investment is significantly higher than CAT 40, especially for high-speed balanced holders
  • Swivel-head design is more complex than trunnion, with higher maintenance costs for the B-axis mechanism

Best For

Aerospace shops running high-speed aluminum structural component machining with tight surface finish specs Mold manufacturers machining large cores and cavities requiring 5-axis high-speed contouring Shops producing large, heavy parts that exceed trunnion table weight limits but need 5-axis access Production environments where 24K RPM cycle time reduction directly impacts per-part profitability Die shops needing swivel-head access to deep cavities from multiple angles with long-reach tooling Contract manufacturers serving aerospace primes with strict surface roughness requirements

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Hurco VMX42HSRTi cost?

New pricing runs $300,000-$400,000 depending on options. This is Hurco's most expensive 42-inch 5-axis platform, reflecting the 24K RPM HSK 63 spindle and swivel-head mechanism. Used machines are rare due to low production volume.

02 What's the difference between the HSRTi and the standard SRTi?

The HSRTi runs a 24,000 RPM HSK 63 spindle with 37 kW (49.6 hp), while the standard VMX42SRTi runs a 12,000 RPM CAT 40 spindle with 30 kW (40 hp). The HSRTi is faster with higher rapids (45/40 vs 38/32 m/min) but has less low-end torque. Choose HSRTi for aluminum high-speed finishing, SRTi for general-purpose steel and aluminum work.

03 Why would I choose a swivel-head over a trunnion table?

Swivel-head machines (SRT) can handle much heavier parts because the workpiece stays on a fixed table — the spindle head provides the 4th and 5th axes. The VMX42HSRTi handles 1,360 kg on the fixed table versus 250 kg on the VMX42Ui trunnion. If your parts are heavy or too large for a trunnion table, swivel-head is the answer.

04 Can I use the 24K RPM spindle for steel?

You can machine steel, but you'll run at much lower RPMs and the 61.2 ft-lbs of torque limits your depth of cut. For occasional steel work it's adequate. For production steel machining, the standard VMX42SRTi with its 40 hp / 98.9 Nm spindle at 12K RPM is better suited.

05 What's the B-axis accuracy on the swivel head?

Hurco specs the B-axis positioning accuracy at ±5 arc-seconds with repeatability of ±3 arc-seconds. The +/-92 degree range provides access to undercuts and steep-wall features that are difficult or impossible with straight 3+2 positioning.
