Overview
The Matsuura MAM72-52V is a simultaneous 5-axis vertical machining center supplied as a complete unattended production cell. The standard configuration includes a 15-station Tower Pallet System and a 130-pocket tool magazine, with a single-pallet version available as the option. That inversion — automation standard, standalone optional — describes the machine's purpose better than any individual figure. It is bought to run without an operator, not to be tended.
Travels are 1,010 mm (39.76 in) in X, 540 mm (21.25 in) in Y and 610 mm (24.01 in) in Z. The working surface is Ø400 mm (Ø15.74 in) and workpieces are accepted to Ø520 × H400 mm (Ø20.47 × H15.74 in) at 300 kg (660 lb) per pallet. The 300 kg limit is what shapes fixture design, and on an automated cell it matters more than usual because the fixture travels with the part through every pallet exchange. It covers a substantial single component or a multi-part fixture in aluminum, but heavy steel workholding consumes the allowance quickly.
The rotary axes cover -125° to +30° in B and a full 360° in C, rapiding at 50 and 100 min-1. Tilting past vertical in B is what gives genuine access to undercut and side-facing features rather than restricting the machine to upward-facing surfaces.
The standard spindle is 15,000 min-1 through SK40/BT40 with 15/22 kW and 150 Nm at 1,400 min-1; 12,000 and 20,000 min-1 spindles are available, as is HSK-A63 tooling. Linear rapids are 60 m/min (2,362.2 ipm) on all three axes.
Tool capacity is the specification that makes the automation function. 130 pockets as standard, with options running 170, 210, 250, 290, 330 and on through 530, is enough to hold complete tool sets plus sister tooling for every job sitting in the pallet queue at once. That is the practical requirement for running a mixed queue overnight — without it, the cell stops the first time a tool wears out or the next pallet needs different tooling.
Control is Matsuura's G-Tech 31i running under MiOS 3. The 52V suits aerospace, medical and precision contract shops running high-mix work where spindle utilization has to stay high across unattended shifts.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Supplied as a complete unattended cell — a 15-station Tower Pallet System is standard and the single-pallet version is the option
- 130 tool pockets as standard, extending through 170, 210, 250, 290, 330 and on to 530, hold complete tool sets plus sister tooling for every job in the pallet queue
- B-axis tilting from -125° to +30° with a full 360° C axis gives genuine access to undercut and side-facing features rather than only upward-facing surfaces
- Linear rapids of 60 m/min (2,362.2 ipm) on all three axes, with rotary rapids of 50 and 100 min-1 in B and C
- Spindle choice of 15,000 min-1 standard on SK40/BT40 with 12,000 and 20,000 min-1 options and HSK-A63 available
- Travels of 1,010 × 540 × 610 mm cover a useful envelope for an automated 5-axis cell
Limitations
- Table load is 300 kg (660 lb) per pallet, and because the fixture travels with the part through every exchange, heavy steel workholding consumes the allowance quickly
- Working surface is Ø400 mm (Ø15.74 in) with workpieces to Ø520 × H400 mm — this is a small-to-medium part cell, not a large-component machine
- Spindle power of 15/22 kW with 150 Nm at 1,400 min-1 is a moderate budget, so heavy roughing in tough material is outside the machine's intent
- 540 mm of Y travel is the tightest linear axis and constrains fixture width
- The automation-first configuration only pays back where there is enough mixed work to keep a pallet queue full

Frequently Asked Questions

The opposite way round from most machines. The standard configuration includes a 15-station Tower Pallet System and a 130-pocket magazine, with a single-pallet version available as the option. That inversion describes the machine's purpose: it is bought to run without an operator, not to be tended.

The working surface is Ø400 mm (Ø15.74 in) and workpieces are accepted to Ø520 × H400 mm (Ø20.47 × H15.74 in), at 300 kg (660 lb) per pallet. Travels are 1,010 mm (39.76 in) in X, 540 mm (21.25 in) in Y and 610 mm (24.01 in) in Z.
03
Because it is what makes the automation function. 130 pockets as standard, with options running 170, 210, 250, 290, 330 and on through 530, is enough to hold complete tool sets plus sister tooling for every job sitting in the pallet queue at once. Without that, the cell stops the first time a tool wears out or the next pallet needs different tooling.
04
The standard spindle is 15,000 min-1 through SK40/BT40, rated 15/22 kW with 150 Nm at 1,400 min-1. Optional 12,000 and 20,000 min-1 spindles are offered, and HSK-A63 tooling is available in place of SK40/BT40. The power figures place the machine in precision and moderate-roughing work rather than heavy stock removal.
05
Against the 300 kg (660 lb) per-pallet limit, which covers the fixture and everything on it. On an automated cell that number matters more than usual because the fixture travels with the part through every pallet exchange. It covers a substantial single component or a multi-part aluminum fixture, but heavy steel workholding uses the allowance quickly.
