Overview

The Fidia GTF/Q4 is a modular upper-gantry 5-axis milling machine sold by configuration, not as one fixed size. X travel starts at 2,700 mm (106 in) and runs through 3,600 mm (142 in), 4,500 mm (177 in), 6,200 mm (244 in) and 8,200 mm (323 in), then continues in steps of +2,000 mm (+79 in). Y is 2,200 / 2,700 / 3,500 mm (86.5 / 106 / 138 in) and Z is 1,000 / 1,200 / 1,500 / 1,800 mm (39 / 47 / 59 / 71 in).

The Q4 in the name refers to the ram. It runs on 4 linear guides placed on opposite sides and clamped in a split Y carriage, which Fidia says gives rigidity and lower torsional effects on the Z axis. The supporting base structures are reinforced concrete for damping and thermal stability, and the axes are driven through rack and pinion, with a double drive on the gantry X axis.

Head choice sets the character of the machine. The M5A and M5S heads carry 55 kW and 88 Nm at 24,000 1/min on HSK-A63, or 65 kW and 124 Nm at 15,000 1/min on HSK-A100. The M5S2 goes to 28,000 1/min with 87 kW on HSK-A63. The M5S3 offers 71 kW and 328 Nm at 15,000 1/min on HSK-A100, and the M3A lists 56 kW and 307 Nm at 10,000 1/min. With the head-changing platform the ram can swap heads automatically, so one machine can rough with a vertical spindle and finish in 5 axes.

Maximum working feed is 30 m/min on X, Y and Z, and table load capacity is 4,000 kg/m² (819 lbs/sqft). The control is the FIDIA C20/C20-Vision or SINUMERIK ONE. Where two crossbeams are wanted on one bed, the Y2G/Q4 is the double-gantry version.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X travel from 2,700 mm (106 in) upward in the listed sizes, extended in steps of +2,000 mm (+79 in)
  • Ram on 4 linear guides in a split Y carriage for rigidity and lower torsional effects in Z
  • Head range from 28,000 1/min (M5S2, HSK-A63) to 328 Nm (M5S3, HSK-A100)
  • Automatic head change through a dedicated interface platform
  • Reinforced concrete base structures for damping and thermal stability

Limitations

  • Maximum working feed is 30 m/min; the Linea M4 lists 60 m/min in X and Y
  • Reinforced concrete supporting structures make this a civil-works installation, not a machine to relocate
  • Table load capacity is 4,000 kg/m² (819 lbs/sqft), lower than the 9,000 kg/m² (1,843 lbs/sqft) of the GTF/R
  • The largest listed Z travel is 1,800 mm (71 in)

Best For

Large dies and moulds in steel and cast iron Aluminum, plastics and composite parts on a long X axis Roughing and 5-axis finishing on one machine through head change

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What sizes does the Fidia GTF/Q4 come in?

X travel is listed at 2,700 mm (106 in), 3,600 mm (142 in), 4,500 mm (177 in), 6,200 mm (244 in) and 8,200 mm (323 in), then in steps of +2,000 mm (+79 in). Y is 2,200 / 2,700 / 3,500 mm (86.5 / 106 / 138 in) and Z is 1,000 / 1,200 / 1,500 / 1,800 mm (39 / 47 / 59 / 71 in).

02 Which milling heads are available on the GTF/Q4?

The brochure lists the M5A and M5S (55 kW at 24,000 1/min on HSK-A63, or 65 kW at 15,000 1/min on HSK-A100), the M5S2 (87 kW at 28,000 1/min, or 62 kW and 148 Nm at 16,000 1/min), the M5S3 (92 kW at 24,000 1/min on HSK-A80, or 71 kW and 328 Nm at 15,000 1/min) and the M3A (56 kW, 307 Nm, 10,000 1/min).

03 What does Q4 mean on the GTF/Q4?

It refers to the design of the carriage and ram: the vertical ram runs on 4 linear guides. Fidia places them on opposite sides of the ram and clamps them in a split Y carriage, which it says provides rigidity and lower torsional effects on the Z axis.

04 Can the GTF/Q4 change heads automatically?

Yes, as an option. The modular ram and head system has a dedicated interface platform that allows automatic head change, and Fidia describes it as suitable for hosting different milling and / or turning equipment. That lets one machine combine vertical-spindle roughing with 5-axis finishing.

05 Which control does the GTF/Q4 use?

The brochure states that the machine is equipped with the FIDIA C20/C20-Vision high speed multi-processor numerical control, or with SINUMERIK ONE. Confirm the choice early, since post-processors and operator training follow from it.
