Overview

On a machine with 12,000 mm (472.4 in) of X travel, where the tools live matters as much as how fast the axes move. The AWEA MCP-12050 carries its magazine on the moving column, so a tool change happens wherever the column is standing. AWEA makes the point itself: the X-axis does not have to move for tool changes.

The magazine holds 40T, with 60T as the option. Each pocket takes a tool up to Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in), or Ø200 mm (Ø7.9 in) when the pockets beside it are left empty. Length is limited to 400 mm (15.7 in) and weight to 20 kg (44 lb). The taper is BBT50. For a long part with bores, faces and drilled patterns spread along its length, the 40T magazine fills quickly once roughing and finishing cutters are doubled up, so the 60T magazine deserves a look at order time.

Travel across the table is 5,400 mm (212.6 in) and the table is 12,000 x 3,800 mm (472.4 x 149.6 in). Z is 1,400 mm (55.1 in), or 1,600 mm as an option. A two positions ATC system and an automatic head changer are standard, which is what lets the machine swap between vertical cutting and an attachment head without an operator climbing onto the table.

Flood coolant comes from a 4,000 liter tank. The 12-metre bed sits in the middle of the group: the MCP-10050 is the shorter neighbour at 10,000 mm (393.7 in) of X, the MCP-14050 the longer one at 14,000 mm (551.2 in).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Tool magazine rides on the column, so the X-axis does not travel to a fixed point for a tool change
  • 40T magazine standard, 60T optional, with tools up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 20 kg (44 lb)
  • Ø200 mm (Ø7.9 in) cutters fit when adjacent pockets are empty
  • Two positions ATC system and automatic head changer are both standard
  • 4,000 liter coolant tank to feed a 12,000 mm working length

Limitations

  • Tool diameter is limited to Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) with a full magazine
  • 20 kg (44 lb) tool weight limit rules out the heaviest face mills and long boring bars
  • The larger 60T magazine is an option; the base machine is delivered with the 40T unit
  • The published table states no maximum table load

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What tools fit the MCP-12050 magazine?

BBT50 tools up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 20 kg (44 lb). Maximum diameter is Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) with neighbouring pockets occupied and Ø200 mm (Ø7.9 in) with them empty. Capacity is 40T as standard and 60T as an option.

02 Does the column have to return to one end of the bed for a tool change?

No. According to AWEA the tool magazine is attached to the column, which removes the need to move the X-axis for tool changes. On 12,000 mm (472.4 in) of X travel at a rapid of 10 m/min (394 ipm), not having to drive to a fixed changer position saves time on every change.

03 What does the two positions ATC system do?

AWEA lists a two positions ATC system and an automatic head changer as standard equipment for multi-face machining. The maker's page does not describe the two positions further, so ask AWEA how tools are exchanged when an attachment head is mounted before planning a process around it.

04 How large is the working area of the MCP-12050?

Travels are 12,000 mm (472.4 in) in X, 5,400 mm (212.6 in) in Y and 1,400 mm (55.1 in) in Z. The table is 12,000 x 3,800 mm (472.4 x 149.6 in). A Z stroke of 1,600 mm is listed as an option.

05 Which MCP models sit either side of the MCP-12050?

The MCP-10050 has 10,000 mm (393.7 in) of X travel and the MCP-14050 has 14,000 mm (551.2 in). Both keep the 5,400 mm (212.6 in) Y travel, the 3,800 mm table width, the BBT50 spindle and the 40T magazine of the MCP-12050.
