Overview
The Mazak VORTEX Horizontal Profiler is a high-speed 5-axis profiling machine purpose-built for aerospace aluminum structural machining. Available as the Horizontal Profiler 160 and 160 XP, these machines deliver extreme spindle speeds (26,000-30,000 RPM) and power (up to 120 kW / 161 hp) for maximum material removal rates on aluminum aerospace alloys.
Both models share a 4,000 x 1,250 mm (157.5 x 49.2 in) table with 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) load capacity. The standard model runs a 26,000 RPM spindle at 45 kW (60 hp) continuous. The XP variant pushes to 30,000 RPM at 120 kW (161 hp) continuous - serious power for hogging aluminum at maximum feed rates.
Spindle options include a standard 120 kW configuration at 42 Nm (31 ft-lb) torque and an optional high-torque variant at 120 kW with 83 Nm (61 ft-lb). High-pressure through-spindle coolant runs 1.5 MPa (218 PSI) standard with options to 3.5 MPa (508 PSI) or 7.0 MPa (1,015 PSI) for aggressive chip evacuation during deep pocket machining.
The maximum workpiece size of 4,000 x 1,600 x 500 mm (157.5 x 63.0 x 19.7 in) covers large aerospace wing ribs, bulkheads, and structural panels. The horizontal spindle orientation provides natural chip fall-away from the cut zone, which is critical during high-speed aluminum machining where chip recutting can damage surface finish.
This machine sits at the top of Mazak's 5-axis hierarchy for aluminum aerospace work, competing directly with dedicated high-speed profilers from Dufieux, Forest-Line, and Starrag. The Mazak advantage is SmoothAi control intelligence, global service network, and competitive lead times vs European specialists.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 30,000 RPM / 120 kW spindle on the XP delivers maximum aluminum material removal rates for aerospace profiling
- High-pressure coolant up to 7.0 MPa (1,015 PSI) provides aggressive chip evacuation during deep pocket machining
- 3,000 kg table load accommodates heavy aluminum billets and fixtures common in aerospace structural work
- Horizontal spindle orientation provides natural chip fall-away preventing recutting and surface damage
- Large 4,000 x 1,600 mm work envelope covers wing ribs, bulkheads, and large structural panels
- SmoothAi CNC optimizes cutting conditions automatically during long high-speed profiling passes
- High-torque spindle option at 83 Nm enables titanium fastener hole drilling and light Ti machining
Limitations
- Starting price approaching $1M with XP configurations exceeding $2M
- Purpose-built for aluminum high-speed profiling; not suitable for general 5-axis work or heavy steel cutting
- Requires high-volume aerospace production to justify the capital investment
- Spindle torque limits restrict the machine to aluminum, composites, and light alloy work
- Massive machine requires significant floor space, foundation, and utilities infrastructure

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The standard Profiler 160 starts around $900,000. The XP with 30K RPM / 120 kW spindle and full options runs $1,500,000-$2,000,000. This is a capital commitment for dedicated aerospace aluminum profiling.
02
The standard runs 26K RPM at 45 kW continuous. The XP pushes to 30K RPM at 120 kW continuous - nearly 3x the power. The XP also gets a wider table. Choose XP for maximum aluminum removal rates; standard for lower-volume work.
03
Limited. The high-torque spindle option at 83 Nm handles titanium fastener hole drilling and light profiling. For serious titanium work, the VORTEX i-V or VORTEX II with high-torque No.50 spindles are better choices.
04
Chips fall away from the cut zone naturally with gravity instead of sitting in pockets. In high-speed aluminum machining, chip recutting damages surface finish and can weld chips to the workpiece. Horizontal orientation eliminates this.
