Overview

The DMG Mori DMU 80 FD eVo is the largest and most capable mill-turn variant in the eVo 5-axis series, combining 800 x 650 x 550 mm (31.5 x 25.6 x 21.7 in) of travel with FreeDrive (FD) turning capability up to 1,200 RPM. This work envelope approaches monoBLOCK territory while maintaining the eVo cost advantage, making it the most attractive option in the lineup for shops needing a large 5-axis mill-turn platform without monoBLOCK pricing.

The swivel rotary table handles workpieces up to 830 mm (32.7 in) in diameter and 600 mm (23.6 in) tall, with a 600 kg (1,323 lb) table load capacity. The B-axis swivel range covers -5 to +110 degrees with 360-degree continuous C-axis rotation. The FD turning function enables the C-axis to rotate at speeds up to 1,200 RPM for integrated turning operations including OD turning, facing, boring, and threading.

The standard speedMASTER spindle runs at 20,000 rpm with HSK-A63 taper. Optional configurations include a 15,000 rpm high-torque variant at 200 Nm, an 18,000 rpm motorspindle at 130 Nm optimized for FD mill-turn, and a 24,000 rpm high-speed option for aluminum and composites. The combination of large work envelope, high turning speed, and generous table load makes the DMU 80 FD eVo the most productive mill-turn machine in the eVo family.

Control options include Siemens and Heidenhain under CELOS X with integrated turning cycles. The DMU 80 FD eVo competes with the Haas UMC-1000, Hermle C 32 (milling-only), and directly challenges entry-level monoBLOCK FD models on capability while maintaining a significant price advantage.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 800 mm X-axis travel and 600 kg table load approach monoBLOCK specifications at eVo pricing
  • 1,200 RPM FD turning speed is higher than monoBLOCK FD models (800 RPM) due to lighter table mass
  • 830 mm max workpiece diameter accommodates mid-large aerospace and mold components for complete machining
  • 20,000 RPM standard speedMASTER with options to 24K RPM covers aluminum through hardened steel
  • Priced significantly below a comparably-sized monoBLOCK FD, making integrated mill-turn accessible
  • Multiple spindle options from 15K to 24K RPM allow material-specific configuration

Limitations

  • B-axis swivel of -5 to +110 degrees is more limited than monoBLOCK models at +/-120 degrees
  • 24-tool standard magazine is undersized for mill-turn work; 60-tool upgrade is almost mandatory
  • eVo assembled frame design is less rigid than monoBLOCK casting under heavy cutting loads
  • At $350K+ the price gap to monoBLOCK models narrows and buyers should evaluate both options
05

Best For

Aerospace shops machining mid-large components that need both 5-axis milling and turning in a single setup Mold and die shops working with medium-size mold inserts requiring contoured surfaces plus turned features Shops that need monoBLOCK-class travel and mill-turn but cannot justify monoBLOCK pricing Production environments running combined mill-turn on larger complex parts for setup reduction General precision manufacturers handling diverse 5-axis mill-turn work up to 600 kg part weight

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a DMG Mori DMU 80 FD eVo cost?

New DMU 80 FD eVo machines price between $350,000 and $520,000 depending on spindle, magazine, and options. The FD variant typically adds $35,000-$50,000 over the standard milling-only DMU 80 eVo. Used units from 2016-2019 appear in the $180,000-$280,000 range.

02 How does the FD turning speed compare to the monoBLOCK?

The eVo FD table turns at up to 1,200 RPM versus the monoBLOCK FD at up to 800 RPM. The lighter eVo table mass allows higher rotational speeds. However, the monoBLOCK offers higher table load (1,000+ kg vs 600 kg) and superior rigidity for heavy turning cuts.

03 Is the assembled frame a disadvantage for mill-turn work?

The eVo assembled frame provides adequate rigidity for most mill-turn applications in aluminum, steel, and composites. For heavy turning in titanium or interrupted cuts on hardened steel, the monoBLOCK casting provides measurably better vibration damping. The eVo excels in applications where speed and versatility matter more than maximum cutting force.

04 What spindle is best for mill-turn applications?

The 18,000 RPM motorspindle at 130 Nm is specifically configured for FD mill-turn work, providing balanced performance for both milling and turning tool engagement. The 15,000 RPM / 200 Nm option is better for heavy steel turning. The 20,000 RPM speedMASTER prioritizes milling performance.
