Overview

Chips are the theme of the Zimmermann FZU27. In Zimmermann's description this unibody gantry has a sophisticated chip management system with self-cleaning chip deflectors and chip conveyors, because the machine is meant to cut more than foam and board: large-volume components in aluminum and ureol, and light HSC machining of steel. It is the model and mold making machine of the 22/27 series.

Travels are 2,000, 2,500 or 4,000 mm (79, 98 or 157 in) in X, 2,500 or 3,500 mm in Y, and 1,250, 1,500 or 1,750 mm (49, 59 or 69 in) in Z. The T-slot table is only 90 mm high, carries 2,000 kg/m² up to a maximum of 10 t, and has 18H12 slots at a 200 mm (8 in) pitch. Against the FZU22 with its clamping bars and 500 kg/m², this is a table that takes real tooling.

Head choice is wider than on the 22 machines: S2, C2, C3 and VH10. The data sheet shows the C3, with a spindle of 20 kW at S1 and 26 kW at S6, torque of 32 Nm and 41 Nm, and a top speed printed as 26,000 U/min, the sheet's notation for revolutions per minute. Constant power begins at 6,000 U/min. That is half the speed at which the 15 kW spindle of the FZU22 reaches it, and the low-end power is what makes light steel work realistic.

Feed rates are up to 60 m/min in X and Y and up to 40 m/min in Z. The footprint without peripherals is 4,320 – 6,270 mm by 5,390 – 7,390 mm, and 4,840 – 5,900 mm high. Accuracy is quoted as in accordance to VDI/DGQ 3441 or ISO 230-2. For stated micron values and a thermo-symmetrical portal, the FZU32 is the next step.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Chip management with self-cleaning chip deflectors and chip conveyors, as Zimmermann describes it
  • T-slot table rated 2,000 kg/m² (max. 10 t)
  • Four head options: S2, C2, C3 and VH10
  • C3 spindle with 20 kW at S1 and constant power from 6,000 U/min
  • Three Z travels up to 1,750 mm (69 in)

Limitations

  • Largest X travel is 4,000 mm (157 in); longer parts need the FZP27, which goes to 20,000 mm
  • No stated positioning accuracy: the table refers to VDI/DGQ 3441 or ISO 230-2
  • Steel is limited to light HSC machining, in Zimmermann's own description
  • Z feed rate is up to 40 m/min, below the up to 60 m/min of X and Y

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What makes the FZU27 different from the FZU22?

Capacity and cutting ability. The FZU27 has a T-slot table for 2,000 kg/m² (max. 10 t) where the FZU22 has clamping bars for 500 kg/m². It offers X up to 4,000 mm and Z up to 1,750 mm, against 2,500 mm and 1,250 mm on the FZU22, and it can take the C3 and VH10 heads in addition to the S2 and C2.

02 What are the working ranges of the FZU27?

The X axis is 2,000, 2,500 or 4,000 mm (79, 98 or 157 in), the Y axis 2,500 or 3,500 mm (98 or 138 in) and the Z axis 1,250, 1,500 or 1,750 mm (49, 59 or 69 in). Other dimensions are available on request, according to the data sheet.

03 Can the FZU27 machine steel?

Within limits. Zimmermann describes the machine as designed to mill aluminum, urethane, or even steel during light HSC machining. The C3 spindle on the data sheet supports that reading: 32 Nm at S1, 41 Nm at S6 and an HSK-F63 tool holder are figures for small tools at high speed, not for heavy roughing.

04 How does the chip management of the FZU27 work?

Zimmermann says self-cleaning chip deflectors and chip conveyors continuously remove chips from the work area, which keeps the machining area clean. The data sheet, which is older than the page text, lists a chip conveyor under optional equipment, so confirm what is included in the configuration you are quoted.

05 Which control does the FZU27 use?

The FZU27 table does not name one. For its portal milling machines as a whole, Zimmermann states that they are equipped with modern CNC controls and gives Heidenhain TNC 7 and Siemens SINUMERIK ONE as the options.
