Overview

The Haas HDC-3-5AX is a double-column 5-axis mill with an HSK-A100 spindle rated at 60 hp (44.7 kW). Travels are 150 × 106 × 43 in (3,810 × 2,692 × 1,092 mm) over a 153 × 49 in (3,886 × 1,245 mm) table that carries 10,000 lb (4,536 kg). The starting price Haas publishes is US$1,102,995.

The spindle is what separates it from the other large Haas 5-axis machines. It tops out at 6,000 rpm and delivers 110 ft-lbf (149 N·m) at 3,000 rpm. The VS-3-5AX, with the same 150 in (3,810 mm) X travel and the same table, has a 29 hp (21.6 kW) HSK-A63 spindle at 20,000 rpm and 20 ft-lbf (27 N·m). The GM-2-5AX has 16 hp (12 kW). So the HDC-3-5AX is the choice when the part is steel, iron or titanium and the cutters are large, and the wrong choice for small tools that need spindle speed.

The brake figures matter for 3+2 work, where the head is locked at an angle and the cut loads the clamp instead of the servo.

Linear motion is deliberate, not quick: 360 ipm (9.1 m/min) in X, which is also the maximum cutting feed, 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) in Y and 600 ipm (15.2 m/min) in Z.
