Overview

The Haas HDC-3-5AX is the most capable machine in the Haas lineup: a double-column 5-axis machining center with a gimbal head, 3,810 x 2,692 x 1,092 mm (150 x 106 x 43 in) of travel, and a 44.7 kW (60 hp) HSK-A100 integral spindle. This machine combines the structural rigidity of the HDC double-column platform with full simultaneous 5-axis capability for the largest, most demanding workpieces.

The 6,000 RPM integral spindle produces 149 Nm (110 ft-lbf) of torque at 3,000 RPM. Unlike the other Haas 5-axis gantry machines that use HSK-63F or HSK-A63 spindles tuned for composites and aluminum, the HDC-3-5AX uses HSK-A100 tooling, which is the heavy-duty 5-axis interface for steel and titanium cutting. The 60 HP rating gives this machine enough power for aggressive material removal in aerospace alloys while maintaining 5-axis orientation.

The B-axis tilts plus/minus 120 degrees with 1,279 Nm of continuous torque and 1,680 Nm of brake torque through a 59:1 gear ratio. The C-axis rotates plus/minus 245 degrees with 1,220 Nm of continuous torque and 2,712 Nm of brake torque through a 105.83:1 ratio. These torque values are the highest of any Haas 5-axis machine and reflect the heavy cutting loads this machine is designed to handle.

The table measures 3,886 x 1,245 mm (153 x 49 in) with a 4,536 kg (10,000 lb) load capacity and 73.5-inch clearance between columns. The 50+1 SMTC accommodates tools up to 13.6 kg and 406 mm in length. Rapids run at 9.1 m/min on X, 10.2 m/min on Y, and 15.2 m/min on Z. The machine requires 220 VAC 3-phase at 105 amps. Base price starts at $551,995, which puts full simultaneous 5-axis double-column capability within reach of shops that would otherwise need to spend well over $1 million with European or Japanese builders. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Double-column construction with gimbal head provides the most rigid 5-axis platform in the Haas lineup
  • HSK-A100 tooling and 60 HP spindle are built for steel and titanium 5-axis work, not just composites and aluminum
  • B-axis torque of 1,279 Nm and C-axis brake torque of 2,712 Nm are the highest rotary axis specs in any Haas machine
  • 150 x 106 inch travel covers the largest aerospace structural components, mold bases, and weldments
  • Base price near $552K undercuts comparable 5-axis double-column machines from European builders by hundreds of thousands
  • 10,000 lb table load handles the heaviest workpieces including large titanium billets and steel castings

Limitations

  • 6,000 RPM max spindle speed limits high-speed finishing with small tools; shops needing higher RPM should consider the VS-3-5AX
  • 105-amp electrical requirement at 220V may require shop electrical service upgrades
  • Multi-crate shipping (column, table, bridge, and sheet metal) requires extensive installation planning
  • 9.1 m/min X-axis and 10.2 m/min Y-axis rapids are slow, adding significant traverse time on large parts
  • Limited installed base and few online user experience reports compared to UMC-series 5-axis machines

Best For

Aerospace structural machining requiring simultaneous 5-axis on large titanium, Inconel, and aluminum components Large mold and die work requiring 5-axis access on parts over 2 meters long Defense applications involving oversized components that require 5-axis orientation in tough alloys Energy sector parts including turbine blades, impellers, and large structural castings Shops that need heavy-duty 5-axis capability on parts too large for trunnion-table UMC machines

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the HDC-3 and HDC-3-5AX?

The HDC-3 is a 3-axis machine with a 7,500 RPM 50-taper gearbox spindle priced above $1.1 million. The HDC-3-5AX adds B and C gimbal-head axes with a 6,000 RPM HSK-A100 integral spindle at roughly half the price. The HDC-3 is for heavy 3-axis work; the HDC-3-5AX is for 5-axis profiling and contouring with the same double-column rigidity.

02 Can the HDC-3-5AX cut steel and titanium?

Yes. Unlike the other Haas gimbal-head machines that use HSK-63F spindles tuned for composites, the HDC-3-5AX uses HSK-A100 tooling with 60 HP and 149 Nm of torque. This combination handles 5-axis cutting in steel, stainless, titanium, and Inconel.

03 What does a new Haas HDC-3-5AX cost?

Base price starts at around $551,995. With options like through-spindle coolant, probing, and production software, expect $600,000 to $650,000 for a fully configured machine.

04 Why is the HDC-3-5AX cheaper than the HDC-3?

The HDC-3 at $1.1M uses a 50-taper gearbox spindle with higher torque for maximum 3-axis material removal. The HDC-3-5AX at $552K uses an integral HSK-A100 spindle with lower torque but adds two rotary axes. The pricing reflects different engineering and market positioning rather than capability ranking.

05 What floor space does the HDC-3-5AX require?

The machine ships in multiple crates: column assembly at 381 x 259 x 221 cm, table assembly at 955 x 231 x 168 cm, and bridge assembly at 610 x 305 x 338 cm. Plan for a minimum clear area of 12 x 6 meters for the machine plus operator access and chip management.
