How much does the AWEA AG5-3220 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the AWEA AG5-3220 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Long parts are the case for the AWEA AG5-3220. Its X travel is 3,200 mm (126.0 in), twice that of the AG5-1620, on the same 2,000 mm (78.7 in) Y and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) Z, and the fixed table measures 3,200 x 2,000 mm (126.0 x 78.7 in). Wing ribs, stringers, long mould halves and rows of smaller parts on one fixture plate are what that length is for.
Length doesn't slow this gantry down. Linear motors drive X and Y, and the rapid traverse rate stays at 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) on both, with 50 m/min (1,969 ipm) in Z. The ball screw RG5-3225, which has the same X stroke, is listed at 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X. On a long workpiece with many repositioning moves between pockets, that gap goes straight into the cycle time.
Where the extra stroke does show is the accuracy table. Under the VDI standard the X axis is listed at P = 0.025 for positioning and Ps = 0.018 mm for repeatability, wider than the P = 0.016 and Ps = 0.012 mm of the AG5-1620. Y and Z are unchanged at P = 0.020 mm and P = 0.016 mm. The JIS figures, ± 0.010 mm positioning and ± 0.003 mm repeatability over full travel, are identical on both sizes. HEIDENHAIN linear scales are standard equipment.
Cutting is done by an Italian made two axes head with a built-in 24,000 rpm HSK-A63 spindle of 42 / 55 kW (56.3 / 73.8 hp). A cooling circuit covers the spindle, the B and C direct drive motors and the X and Y linear motors.
Plan the installation early. This is a 45,000 kg (99,206 lb) machine, against 35,000 kg (77,160 lb) for the AG5-1620. The coolant tank holds 900 L, and the air requirement is printed as 6 ~ 8 (6) kg/cm².

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- X rapid stays at 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) over 3,200 mm (126.0 in) of travel; the RG5-3225 is listed at 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X
- 3,200 x 2,000 mm (126.0 x 78.7 in) fixed table rated 3,000 kg/m², so the load never rides on a moving axis
- Y and Z accuracy figures match the shorter AG5-1620: P = 0.020 mm and P = 0.016 mm under the VDI standard
- Linear motors on X and Y, described by the maker as low wear and zero backlash, suit a long axis that sees constant traverse
- X axis carried on 4 linear guideways with 12 sliding blocks on a U-shaped base
Limitations
- X positioning widens to P = 0.025 and repeatability to Ps = 0.018 mm, from P = 0.016 and Ps = 0.012 mm on the AG5-1620
- Weighs 45,000 kg (99,206 lb), which sets the foundation and crane requirements
- Y is 2,000 mm (78.7 in); panels wider than that need the 2,500 mm (98.4 in) Y of the RG5-3225
- Maximum tool weight of 7 kg (15 lb) and length of 300 mm (11.8 in) rule out large face mills and long boring tools
- Z travel of 1,000 mm (39.4 in) has to cover the part height, the fixture and the swing of the head

Frequently Asked Questions
01
No. The table gives 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) for X and Y and 50 m/min (1,969 ipm) for Z on the AG5-3220, the same as on the AG5-1620. X and Y are driven by linear motors, so there is no long ball screw whose critical speed would limit the axis. The cutting feed rate range is 1 ~ 20 m/min (39 ~ 787 ipm).
02
Under the VDI standard, X positioning is P = 0.025 over full travel and X repeatability is Ps = 0.018 mm. Under JIS the table gives ± 0.010 mm positioning and ± 0.003 mm repeatability over full travel. For parts that need the tighter VDI figure across their length, compare the AG5-1620, listed at P = 0.016 and Ps = 0.012 mm.
03
The maximum workpiece dimensions are 3,200 x 2,000 x 1,000 mm (126.0 x 78.7 x 39.4 in) and the table load is 3,000 kg/m². Spindle nose to table distance runs 50 ~ 1,050 mm (2.0 ~ 41.3 in). With the head turned horizontal, the spindle center sits 373 ~ 1,373 mm (14.7 ~ 54.1 in) above the table. The distance between columns is 3,000 (2,805) mm with the water eliminator.
04
AWEA states that the spindle reaches thermal stability within 10 minutes from a cold start and that thermal expansion afterwards stays below 0.01 mm. The built-in spindle, the B and C direct drive motors and the X and Y linear motors are all cooled, and closed-loop optical scales are fitted on all linear axes.
05
Both have 3,200 mm (126.0 in) of X, 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of Z and a weight of 45,000 kg (99,206 lb). The AG5-3220 is the fast one, at 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) in X and Y. The RG5-3225 is wider, with 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of Y, takes tools up to 400 mm (15.7 in) and 8 kg (18 lb), and offers an HSK-A100 head. Its X rapid is 20 m/min (787 ipm).
