Overview

The Hermle C 42 U GEN2 is the updated generation of Hermle's mid-size High-Performance Line 5-axis machining center, featuring upgraded rapids, doubled table capacity, and the latest control options. With 800 x 800 x 550 mm (31.5 x 31.5 x 21.7 in) of X/Y/Z travel and a 1,400 kg (3,086 lb) table load capacity — doubled from the original C 42 U's 700 kg — the GEN2 opens the machine to heavier workpieces and more aggressive fixturing.

The swiveling rotary table measures 800 mm (31.5 in) diameter with a collision circle of 990 mm (39.0 in) and maximum vertical table clearance of 700 mm. The A-axis provides +/- 115 degrees of swivel with 360-degree continuous C-axis rotation. The modified gantry architecture positions all linear axes in the spindle carrier for optimal dynamic accuracy.

Spindle options span 15,000 to 42,000 rpm including 16,000, 20,000, and 25,000 rpm variants on HSK-A63 tooling. Rapid traverse is a significant upgrade to 45 m/min (1,772 ipm) on X and Y with optional 60 m/min, and 40 m/min on Z with optional 60 m/min. The mineral-cast base weighs approximately 14,000 kg total.

The C 42 U GEN2 sits in the sweet spot of the High-Performance Line — large enough for serious aerospace and mold work, but compact enough for efficient automation cells. It competes with the DMG Mori DMU 80 eVo and Makino a81nx. New pricing runs $580,000-$850,000.

Positioning accuracy remains +/- 0.005 mm with repeatability of +/- 0.003 mm. The faster rapids and doubled table load make the GEN2 a more productive machine than its predecessor without sacrificing the accuracy Hermle is known for.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Table load capacity doubled to 1,400 kg for heavier workpieces and aggressive fixturing
  • 45/60 m/min rapids are significantly faster than the original C 42 U at 45 m/min
  • Symmetrical 800 x 800 mm X/Y travel handles large 5-axis workpieces
  • 29 kW spindle with options to 42,000 rpm covers titanium roughing through aluminum finishing
  • Tool magazine expandable to 160 positions for complex multi-operation programs
  • HS-flex pallet automation available for lights-out production cells

Limitations

  • Premium pricing starting at $580,000 is beyond many shop budgets
  • 14,000 kg requires substantial foundation planning and floor load capacity
  • Hermle North American service less widespread than DMG Mori or Mazak
  • Standard tool change time is slower than some competitors in this class

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What changed from the original C 42 U to the GEN2?

Major upgrades include: table load doubled to 1,400 kg (from 700 kg), rapid traverse options to 60 m/min, TNC7 and SINUMERIK ONE controls, and new 16K/25K spindle options. The work envelope remains the same at 800 x 800 x 550 mm.

02 What does a Hermle C 42 U GEN2 cost?

New machines run $580,000-$850,000 depending on control, spindle, tool magazine, and automation options.

03 How does the C 42 U GEN2 compare to the C 32 U GEN2?

The C 42 U GEN2 offers 150 mm more X, 150 mm more Y, 50 mm more Z, and 400 kg more table capacity. Both share the same rapid traverse capabilities and control options.

04 Is there a mill-turn version?

Yes, the C 42 U MT GEN2 adds 800 rpm turning capability to the C-axis table via direct-drive torque motor for integrated mill-turn operations.
