Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp SVX-160-F that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Sharp SVX-160-F is the smallest of Sharp's trunnion-table 5-axis machining centers, built for parts that fit a 6.3 in (160 mm) C-axis platter and weigh no more than 132 lb (60 kg). X travel is 25.2 in (640 mm) and Y is 17.1 in (435 mm); the C axis turns a full 360°.
Two figures are missing from this page on purpose. Sharp's own product page gives more than one value for the Z travel and prints the tilt range of the A axis with opposite signs in different places, so neither is repeated here. Get both in writing from Sharp before judging whether a part and its tools clear. What the table does state is the spindle nose to table distance with A at zero: 3.93-20.07 in (100-510 mm).
The trunnion is a roller cam type, which Sharp describes as zero backlash, with the A-axis cradle 12.2 in (310 mm) across. Small as the table is, the rest of the machine is a normal 40-taper center: a direct-coupled CAT Big plus spindle at 12,000 rpm on ceramic bearings, 10/15 hp (7.5/11 kW), with 51 ft-lb at 1500 rpm falling to 20 ft-lb at 4000 rpm. Rapids are 1417.32 ipm (36,000 mm/min) and linear repeatability is 0.00012 in (0.003 mm).
Sharp fits the Fanuc 31i-B5 control with a 10.4" color LCD screen and lists AICC II (200 blocks look ahead) and high speed smooth TCP among its functions. A BLUM Z-nano tool setter and BLUM T-60 touch probe are standard, as are the spindle chiller and internal chip auger. The CTS pump, oil skimmer and Mitutoyo linear scales are options. The whole machine weighs 8,760 lb (3980 kg) and takes a space 79.5 in wide by 86.5 in deep.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- BLUM touch probe and tool setter are standard accessories
- Fanuc 31i-B5 control with AICC II (200 blocks look ahead) and high speed smooth TCP
- Roller cam type trunnion table, described by Sharp as zero backlash
- 12,000 rpm direct-coupled spindle with a 24-tool side-mount changer
- Compact: 79.5 in by 86.5 in of floor and 8,760 lb (3980 kg)
Limitations
- Work is limited to 132 lb (60 kg) on a 6.3 in (160 mm) C-axis table
- Sharp's page is inconsistent about Z travel and A-axis tilt, so both must be confirmed with the maker
- Linear scales (3 axes, by MITUTOYO) and the CTS pump are optional
- Cutting feed tops out at 393.7 ipm (10,000 mm/min)

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Sharp gives a maximum workpiece weight of 132 lb (60 kg). The trunnion table row reads A axis 12.2 in (310 mm) and C axis 6.3 in (160 mm), and the T-slot width is 0.47 in (12 mm). With A at zero the spindle nose sits 3.93-20.07 in (100-510 mm) above the table.
02
A FANUC 31iB5 with a 10.4" LCD color screen. Sharp lists tool path graphics, a built-in 3D interface, the high speed HRV3 function, AICC II (200 blocks look ahead), high speed smooth TCP, rigid tapping, a detachable electronic handwheel, RS232, a USB port and embedded Ethernet.
03
Yes. Sharp states that the BLUM Z-nano tool setter, for tool breakage detection and tool length measurement, and the BLUM T-60 touch probe, for identifying and setting up parts and measuring features in cycle, are both standard on the machine.
04
12,000 rpm with ceramic bearings, an ISO 40 taper in CAT Big plus form and a direct coupling. The motor is 10/15 hp (7.5/11 kW). Torque is 51 ft-lb at 1500 rpm and 20 ft-lb at 4000 rpm, which Sharp also gives as 70 Nm at 1500 rpm.
