Overview

Y travel of 4,100 mm (161.4 in) and a 5,000 x 3,600 mm (196.9 x 141.7 in) table place the Hartford Aero-541B in the middle of the five-metre Aero models. X travel is 5,000 mm (196.9 in). Hartford describes the machine as a gantry type 5-faced machining center.

In a 5-faced machine the vertical spindle cuts the top of the part and an attached head cuts the four sides. Hartford gives the Aero's angular head a C axis that indexes in 1 degree steps, so the head can be turned to face any side, or any angle in between, and locked there. Features on inclined side planes are within reach; swept surfaces that need continuous rotation are not, and belong on the Aero-541BL-5X.

Heads are stored out of the chips. Each head magazine has an independent moving door, opened only during a changeover, and a hydraulic cylinder performs the exchange.

The spec table is short. Table load is 5,000 kg/m², Z travel 1,000 mm (1,200 mm optional), spindle taper #50, gear-head speed 6,000 rpm with 8,000 rpm optional. Tool magazines are an S type for 30 tools, optionally 40, or an A type for 40, optionally 60.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 5,000 x 3,600 mm (196.9 x 141.7 in) table with 4,100 mm (161.4 in) of Y travel
  • Angular head with C-axis indexing of 1 degree
  • Head magazines closed by doors that open only during changeover
  • Table rated at 5,000 kg/m²

Limitations

  • Indexed heads cannot machine continuously swept surfaces
  • Z travel of 1,000 mm, or 1,200 mm with the option
  • Hybrid 10,000 rpm spindle costs extra specification; the base is a 6,000 rpm gear head

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does 5-faced mean on the Aero-541B?

The top face is machined with the vertical spindle and the four side faces with an angular head. Hartford states C-axis indexing of 1 degree for the head and offers universal, 90 degree and extension heads.

02 How large is the Aero-541B?

Table 5,000 x 3,600 mm (196.9 x 141.7 in), X travel 5,000 mm (196.9 in), Y travel 4,100 mm (161.4 in), Z travel 1,000 mm or 1,200 mm. The table is rated at 5,000 kg/m².

03 How are the heads protected on the Aero-541B?

The full automatic head changer has a protective cover and an independent head magazine. Each magazine has its own moving door, which opens only during the head changeover to prevent debris from contaminating the heads.

04 How does the Aero-541B differ from the Aero-536B?

It is wider. The Aero-536B has a 5,000 x 3,100 mm (196.9 x 122.0 in) table and 3,600 mm (141.7 in) of Y travel; the Aero-541B has a 3,600 mm wide table and 4,100 mm of Y.
