Overview

A heavy spindle hanging from a 2-axis head puts a long lever on a gantry, and AXA answers it on the UPFZ 50 with a different portal. This model has the portal in an inclined bed version, which AXA says reduces the distance between the Y-guideway and the swivel head and so increases overall stability. The UPFZ 50 is the SK 50 member of AXA's large 5-side gantry series.

The standard spindle drive no. 161 delivers 540 Nm from 28 kW at 40% DC. Drive no. 163 keeps the 540 Nm and adds power, 57 kW. For faster work there are drives no. 131 with 286 Nm and no. 133 with 355 Nm, each with up to 9,000 rpm as an option. Unlike the three-axis PFZ 50, the UPFZ 50 does not list the 820 Nm drive no. 182. Feed force is 12,000 N.

The head covers 180° in A and 360° in B and indexes in 2.5° steps, with 1° and 0.001° optional. Turned horizontal, it costs 2 x 460 mm of X and Y travel; a shorter figure of 2 x 360 mm is also printed. The nominal ranges are 3,000 mm to 10,000 mm in X, 1,500 mm to 4,000 mm in Y and 800 mm to 1,500 mm in Z.

The table is rated at 1,500 kg/m², optionally 2,000 kg/m². Tools up to 110 mm in diameter come from a stationary changer with 22 pockets. AXA lists an NC-rotary table among its examples of use, which turns the machine toward ring and round parts.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • SK 50 spindle in a 2-axis head, with 540 Nm as standard
  • Inclined bed portal that AXA says increases overall stability
  • Feed force of 12,000 N, against 9,000 N on the UPFZ 40
  • Head angles of 180° (A-axis) and 360° (B-axis) for 5-side machining
  • Y travel range up to 4,000 mm and X up to 10,000 mm
  • Table load of 2,000 kg/m² available as an option

Limitations

  • Horizontal spindle reduces X and Y travel by 2 x 460 mm on the standard head
  • Standard drive no. 161 has 28 kW; more power requires drive no. 163 or no. 133
  • The 820 Nm drive no. 182 of the PFZ 50 is not listed for this model
  • Head indexing of 2.5° as standard; rapids of 15/15/10 m/min

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the inclined bed portal on the UPFZ 50?

AXA states that the UPFZ 50 has its portal in an inclined bed version for increased stability and rigidity. According to AXA, the inclined bed portal reduces the distance between the Y-guideway and the swivel head. The data sheet gives no separate figures for it.

02 Which spindle drives are available?

No. 161 is standard: 4,000 rpm, up to 7,500 rpm optional, 540 Nm and 28 kW. Options are no. 163 with 540 Nm and 57 kW, no. 133 with 355 Nm and 56 kW, and no. 131 with 286 Nm and 45 kW. Ratings are at 40% DC. Holders are SK 50, optionally BT 50, HSK A100 or C8.

03 How much travel is lost with the spindle horizontal?

The row "with horizontal spindle minus" reads 2 x 460 mm for X and for Y, with 2 x 360 mm in brackets. In the X row the bracketed figure is marked as an optional feature. The minimum distance from table to spindle nose is 230 mm horizontal and vertical, or 230 mm / 330 mm optionally.

04 How accurate is the UPFZ 50?

Positioning accuracy is ± 0.02 mm per 1,000 mm per axis X/Y/Z, and AXA notes that increased accuracy is available on request. Repeating accuracy is ± 0.0075 mm. Direct measuring systems are fitted on the X, Y and Z axes.
