Overview
The Haas UMC-500 is a mid-range 5-axis universal machining center with 610 x 406 x 406 mm (24 x 16 x 16 in) of travel and a trunnion-table design. It sits right in the sweet spot of the Haas UMC lineup, offering enough work envelope for the majority of 5-axis job shop and production work while keeping the price well under $200K at base.
The spindle is a 22.4 kW (30 hp) inline direct-drive unit running to 8,100 RPM with 122 Nm (90 ft-lbf) of torque at 2,000 RPM. That is the same spindle found in the VF-2, which means proven reliability and strong torque for steel and stainless work. The CT40/BT40/HSK-A63 taper options give shops flexibility to match their existing tooling infrastructure. Air/oil injection bearing lubrication and liquid cooling keep the spindle thermally stable.
The trunnion carries a 400 mm (15.7 in) platter with five T-slots and a 226.8 kg (500 lb) capacity, or 90.7 kg (200 lb) with the optional pallet pool. The B-axis tilts from +120 to -35 degrees with 2,514 Nm of continuous torque and 1,220 Nm brake torque. The C-axis provides full 360-degree rotation with matching 2,514 Nm continuous torque. Maximum part swing is 457 mm (18 in). These trunnion torque values are among the highest in the 40-taper 5-axis class and allow aggressive cutting without losing workpiece orientation.
The 30+1 SMTC posts 2.8-second tool-to-tool and 3.6-second chip-to-chip times. Rapids run at 22.9 m/min (900 ipm) on all axes. At 5,400 kg (11,900 lb), the UMC-500 has enough mass for solid chatter dampening. The machine requires 220 VAC at 70 amps. For shops running 5-axis parts in the 200-450mm range, the UMC-500 delivers the best combination of power, platter capacity, and price in the Haas 5-axis catalog. Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 30 HP spindle with 122 Nm of torque handles steel and stainless 5-axis work, not just aluminum and composites
- 2,514 Nm of trunnion torque on both B and C axes is among the highest in the 40-taper 5-axis class
- 500 lb platter capacity accommodates medium-sized workpieces and heavy fixtures for production 5-axis
- HSK-A63 taper option available from the factory for shops standardizing on HSK tooling
- 30+1 SMTC with 2.8-second tool-to-tool keeps cycle times tight on multi-tool 5-axis programs
- Base price under $193K makes this the most accessible 30 HP 5-axis machine on the market
- Optional pallet pool enables unattended production for lights-out 5-axis manufacturing
Limitations
- 8,100 RPM spindle limits high-speed aluminum finishing; the UMC-750SS with 12K RPM costs $47K more
- 50 °/sec rotary axis speeds are slower than high-speed 5-axis machines from DMG Mori and Hermle
- 200 lb pallet pool capacity is restrictive for heavier parts that use the full 500 lb platter capacity
- 610 mm X-travel may feel tight for shops working on parts approaching the 18-inch swing limit

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts at around $192,995. With through-spindle coolant, probing, high-speed machining software, and a pallet pool, expect $230,000 to $250,000 for a fully loaded configuration.
02
The UMC-750 has 762 x 508 x 508 mm of travel versus 610 x 406 x 406 mm on the UMC-500. Both share the same 30 HP 8,100 RPM spindle. The UMC-750 has a 630 mm platter with 750 lb capacity versus 400 mm and 500 lb. Choose the UMC-500 for parts under 18-inch swing; the UMC-750 for larger work up to 24-inch swing.
03
Yes. The 30 HP spindle with 122 Nm of torque and 2,514 Nm of trunnion holding torque provides the power and rigidity for titanium machining. Shops producing titanium medical implants and aerospace fittings use the UMC-500 regularly.
04
Yes, Haas offers an optional pallet pool for the UMC-500. The pallet pool capacity is 200 lb per pallet versus the standard 500 lb platter capacity, so plan part weight and fixture design accordingly.
05
Any CAM package supporting simultaneous 5-axis toolpaths will work. Mastercam, Fusion 360, NX, and hyperMILL are commonly used. Haas provides post processor support through the HFO network, and many CAM vendors include Haas UMC posts as standard.
