Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fryer SX-45 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fryer SX-45 is a 5-axis machining center that splits its rotary axes between the head and the table. The spindle head swivels through a B travel of +/- 110°, and a rotary table supplies the C axis. Linear travels are 45 x 25 x 25 in (1,143 x 635 x 635 mm) on roller type linear ways.
This layout differs from a trunnion machine in a useful way: the part never tilts. It sits on a 24 x 51 in (610 x 1,295 mm) machine table rated 5,500 lb (2,495 kg) and at most rotates about a vertical axis, so heavy or tall workpieces stay stable while the spindle leans over to reach their sides. Fryer's table lists a 24 in (610 mm) built-in rotary table size for this model, and the options sheet makes clear that the buyer selects the type and size of rotary table, flush mounted or table mounted.
The spindle is a motorized unit with 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak, 100 - 18,000 rpm and 85 ft-lb (115 Nm) at 850 rpm, in Big Plus CAT-40 with HSK-63A as the alternative. That is roughly double the torque of the 18,000 rpm spindle in Fryer's 5X-60, which is why Fryer speaks of high rigidity for heavy cutting on this series.
Axis rapids are 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) in X and Y and 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) in Z. The head positions to 15 seconds of arc, with 5 seconds of arc shown in brackets. A 40-station arm type changer is standard. The machine weighs 17,500 lb (7,938 kg) and takes 127 x 104 in (3,226 x 2,642 mm) of floor.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Tilting head with +/- 110° of B travel; the part stays upright
- 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak, 18,000 rpm spindle with 85 ft-lb (115 Nm) at 850 rpm
- Machine table rated 5,500 lb (2,495 kg)
- Can be used as a 3-axis or 5-axis machine
- 40-station arm type tool changer, 3 seconds tool change
Limitations
- The rotary table has to be selected as an option; type and size are chosen at order
- B and C accuracy is 15 seconds of arc in the base row, coarser than the 5 seconds of arc of the 5X-60
- Y and Z travels are 25 in (635 mm), partly consumed when the head tilts
- Requires 80 A at 430-500 VAC

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Three linear axes, a tilting spindle head (B travel of +/- 110°) and a rotary table for C, listed with +/- 360° of travel. Fryer offers a flush mounted 24” rotary table built into the machine table or a table mounted 12” rotary table.
02
A motorized spindle running 100 - 18,000 rpm with 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak and 85 ft-lb (115 Nm) at 850 rpm. The taper is Big Plus CAT-40, with BT-40 and HSK-63A listed as alternatives. The spindle nose is 11 in (279 mm) from the centre of rotation of the head.
03
The 5X-60 has both rotary axes in a 2-axis head and no rotary table, with 35 hp (26.1 kW) peak and 40 ft-lb (54 Nm). The SX-45 tilts the head on one axis and rotates the part on a table, with 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak and 85 ft-lb (115 Nm), and has 45 in (1,143 mm) of X against 60 in (1,524 mm).
04
Fryer's table gives a rotary rapid traverse of 33 rpm for the B axis and 22 rpm for the C axis. Linear rapids are 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) in X and Y and 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) in Z, with cutting feed up to 900 ipm (22.9 m/min).
