How much does the Makino a630iT cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Makino a630iT that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Makino a630iT is a trunnion-type five-axis horizontal machining center on a 630 mm (25 in) pallet, with 1,000 mm (39 in) of X, 1,000 mm (39 in) of Y and 1,050 mm (41 in) of Z. Makino builds it as a "B over A" arrangement: a gear-driven A axis with 240° of motion carries a direct-drive B axis that turns a full 360°. Workpieces up to Ø 1,000 mm x 800 mm High (Ø 39 in x 32 in High) and 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) fit the envelope.
That combination of a geared tilt and a direct-drive rotary is aimed at heavy parts. The geared A axis carries the load through the tilt, and the direct-drive B positions the part. Makino's argument for the trunnion is that the rotary arrangement reduces part handling between operations.
Three spindles are listed. The standard spindle runs to 10,000 rpm; an 8,000 rpm spindle and a 15,000 rpm spindle are both options. The spindle choice shows up in the tool change, which is 1.9 sec tool-to-tool with the 10,000 or 15,000 rpm spindle and 2.3 sec with the 8,000 rpm one. The 136-tool magazine is standard, and tools may be up to Ø 356 mm and 35 kg (77 lb), which allows large face mills and long boring bars. Rapids are 60,000 mm/min (2,362 in/min) and the cutting feedrate is 50,000 mm/min (1,969 in/min).
On the control side the a630iT was the first machine to carry Makino's Fanuc-based Pro7, with a 24-inch full-HD touch screen and several 3D visual tools. Super Geometric Intelligence (SGI) for high-speed five-axis motion and Machine Status Insight (MSI), which monitors the health of critical systems in real time, are both standard. So is an automatic pallet changer that accepts manual or automated loading, and Makino also offers single and multi-machine pallet systems and robot automation.
The Makino a800Z takes the same pallet size, listed as 630 mm (24.8 in), in a Z-type layout with more travel, 1,280 mm (50.4 in) of X, but starts with a 60-tool magazine against the 136 tools standard here.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 136-tool magazine as standard, with tools up to Ø 356 mm and 35 kg (77 lb)
- Carries workpieces up to Ø 1,000 mm x 800 mm High (Ø 39 in x 32 in High) and 1,000 kg (2,205 lb)
- B over A trunnion: 240° gear-driven A axis with a 360° direct-drive B axis
- Choice of three spindles: 10,000 rpm standard, with 8,000 rpm and 15,000 rpm options
- Pro7 control with a 24-inch full-HD touch screen, plus SGI and Machine Status Insight (MSI) as standard
Limitations
- Standard spindle tops out at 10,000 rpm; higher speed means the 15,000 rpm option
- Tool-to-tool time rises from 1.9 sec to 2.3 sec with the optional 8,000 rpm spindle
- The A axis is gear driven rather than direct drive, and its range is 240° rather than a full turn
- The spec table lists no spindle taper, so the toolholder interface must be confirmed with Makino

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A "B over A" trunnion. The A axis is gear driven with a 240° range of motion, and the B axis on top of it is direct drive with full 360° rotation. Makino describes it as built for reliable positioning of heavy workpieces with minimal part handling.
02
10,000 rpm is standard. An 8,000 rpm spindle and a 15,000 rpm spindle are optional. Tool-to-tool time is 1.9 sec with the 10,000 or 15,000 rpm spindle and 2.3 sec with the 8,000 rpm spindle. The spec table does not list spindle power, torque or taper.
03
Up to 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) and Ø 1,000 mm x 800 mm High (Ø 39 in x 32 in High) on the 630 mm (25 in) pallet. Travels are 1,000 mm (39 in) in X and Y and 1,050 mm (41 in) in Z.
04
Makino's Fanuc-based Pro7, which the a630iT was the first machine to offer. It has a 24-inch full-HD touch screen, several 3D visual tools and can integrate with system software. Super Geometric Intelligence (SGI) for five-axis motion and Machine Status Insight (MSI) health monitoring are standard.
05
Both run 630 mm pallets and a 10,000 rpm standard spindle. The a800Z is a Z-type machine with more travel, 1,280 mm (50.4 in) of X and 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Y, and a 60-tool standard magazine. The a630iT is a B over A trunnion with 1,000 mm (39 in) of X and Y and 136 tools standard.
