Overview
The Mazak VARIAXIS i NEO is the latest evolution of Mazak's flagship simultaneous 5-axis vertical machining center platform, available in three frame sizes: the i-600 NEO, i-700 NEO, and i-800 NEO. The NEO designation signals the upgrade to the MAZATROL SmoothAi CNC with AI-driven spindle vibration detection and thermal compensation, replacing the older Matrix 2 control.
The i-700 NEO offers axis travels of 730 x 1,050 x 600 mm (28.7 x 41.3 x 23.6 in) on X, Y, and Z. That long Y-axis stroke gives shops the ability to handle elongated aerospace brackets that would otherwise require a larger machine class. The trunnion table tilts from -120 to +30 degrees on A and rotates 360 degrees continuous on C, driven by Mazak's backlash-free roller gear cam system with 0.0001-degree indexing.
The i-600 NEO carries a standard 12,000 RPM / BT40 spindle. The i-700 NEO steps up to 18,000 RPM with BIG-PLUS No.40, while the i-800 NEO runs BIG-PLUS No.50 at 10,000 RPM for heavy-duty steel and titanium. All three accept optional high-speed or high-torque spindles.
Full gantry construction without overhang distributes cutting loads evenly and minimizes thermal deflection. Mazak's MX Hybrid Roller Guide System delivers 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) rapids while maintaining vibration damping.
The SmoothAi Spindle feature uses a vibration sensor to detect chatter onset, then automatically adjusts spindle speed and feed rate in real time. Ai Thermal Shield compensates for thermal growth during lights-out runs. Automation options include two-pallet changers and full PALLETECH integration. Tool magazines range from 30 to 120 tools.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- SmoothAi with AI-driven spindle vibration detection automatically suppresses chatter for good surface finishes
- Full gantry construction provides symmetrical rigidity during long unmanned runs
- Three frame sizes cover 700 mm to 1,000 mm diameter workpieces
- Roller gear cam on both rotary axes eliminates backlash with 0.0001-degree indexing
- Ai Thermal Shield compensates for thermal growth during lights-out operation
- Long Y-axis (1,050 mm on i-700 NEO) handles elongated aerospace parts
- PALLETECH-ready for multi-machine unmanned production
Limitations
- Premium pricing over standard VARIAXIS i may not be justified for single-shift shops
- i-600 and i-700 NEO limited to No.40 taper restrict heavy roughing vs No.50
- Standard 30-tool magazine undersized for complex parts
- Mazak proprietary control - no Siemens or Heidenhain option
- i-800 NEO at 10,000 RPM slow for high-speed aluminum without upgrade

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New pricing ranges from $375,000 (base i-600 NEO) to $650,000+ (fully optioned i-800 NEO). The i-700 NEO in two-pallet, 80-tool config runs $450,000-$550,000. NEO commands 10-15% premium over non-NEO.
02
NEO replaces Matrix 2 with SmoothAi CNC. Same platform. Adds AI spindle vibration detection, Ai Thermal Shield, modernized touchscreen, improved rotary cooling.
03
i-600 NEO: parts to 700 mm in aluminum. i-700 NEO: most popular for aerospace/medical. i-800 NEO: No.50 taper for heavy steel/titanium.
04
Yes. i-700 NEO high-torque spindle handles Ti. i-800 NEO No.50 at 10K RPM better for heavy Ti. AI chatter suppression valuable in titanium.
05
Vibration sensor monitors cutting. AI adjusts speed/feed in real time to suppress chatter across all materials for better finishes during unmanned runs.
