Overview

The Anderson FUV-250 is a compact trunnion-type 5-axis machining center with a Ø255 mm (Ø10.0 in) table rated for 100 kg (220 lb). It shares its frame with the smaller FUV-170: X travel is the same 360 mm (14.2 in), Z the same 465 mm (18.3 in), and both machines weigh 4,500 kg (9,921 lb). Y travel is slightly longer at 440 mm (17.3 in).

So the choice between the two is about the table. The FUV-250 carries more than three times the load of the FUV-170, which lists 30 kg (66 lb), and the larger faceplate takes a proper 5-axis vise or a small fixture plate. In exchange the rotary axes are much slower. A is listed at 22.2 rpm and C at 33.3 rpm, both direct drive, where the FUV-170 lists 100 rpm and 250 rpm. For 3+2 work, where the table indexes and then stands still, that hardly matters. For continuous 5-axis contouring of small parts it does.

The spindle is the lighter of the two used in the series: ISO 40, direct drive, 12,000 rpm with 15,000 listed, and a 5.5/7.5 kW motor. With 100 kg on the table the machine can hold a steel workpiece of real size, but the motor is better matched to aluminum and to finishing than to heavy stock removal.

A tilts from +30° to -120° and C turns through a continuous 360°. Linear rapids are 36/36/36 m/min and the cutting feed rate is 12 m/min. The 24 tool magazine, with 30 and 36 listed, changes tools in 1.55 sec. Coolant capacity is 180 L. Control is FANUC 0i-MF.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø255 mm (Ø10.0 in) table rated for 100 kg (220 lb)
  • Same 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) machine weight as the FUV-170 with a larger table
  • Direct-drive A and C axes with 0.001° resolution
  • 36/36/36 m/min linear rapids
  • Positioning accuracy of ±0.008 mm and repeatability of ±0.005 mm

Limitations

  • Rotary speeds of 22.2 rpm on A and 33.3 rpm on C are far below the 100 rpm and 250 rpm of the FUV-170
  • X travel is only 360 mm (14.2 in)
  • Spindle motor is 5.5/7.5 kW; the 7.5/11 kW motor starts with the FUV-400
  • Coolant tank is 180 L, against 350 L on the FUV-400

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the table size and load of the FUV-250?

The table is Ø255 mm (Ø10.0 in) and the maximum table load is 100 kg (220 lb). Travels are 360 mm (14.2 in) in X, 440 mm (17.3 in) in Y and 465 mm (18.3 in) in Z.

02 Should I choose the FUV-250 or the FUV-170?

Choose by part weight and by how the rotary axes are used. The FUV-250 carries 100 kg (220 lb) on a Ø255 mm table; the FUV-170 carries 30 kg (66 lb) on Ø170 mm. The FUV-170 has much faster rotary axes, 100 rpm on A and 250 rpm on C, which favours continuous 5-axis motion on small parts. Spindle, magazine and linear rapids are the same.

03 What is the tilt range of the FUV-250?

The A axis tilts from +30° to -120° and the C axis rotates 360° continuously. Both axes are direct drive with a resolution of 0.001°. Tilting past the horizontal lets the tool reach slightly undercut features without a second setup.

04 How big is the FUV-250 as a machine?

Machine dimensions are 2,560 x 3,310 x 2,910 mm (100.8 x 130.3 x 114.6 in) and the weight is 4,500 kg (9,921 lb). It needs air at 5-7 kg/cm² and has a 180 L coolant tank with a flow of 100 L/min.
