Overview

The Zimmermann FZP32 is where the FZP line switches from citing accuracy standards to stating accuracy figures. In standard form the linear axes are specified at ≤10μm / ≤6μm (A/R to ISO 230-2) with a volumetric accuracy of ≤70μm / ≤50μm, and an increased-accuracy configuration tightens those to ≤8μm / ≤4μm and ≤50μm / ≤30μm. The machine itself is a 5-axis gantry with a centre-guided, thermo-symmetrical portal for aluminum, fiber composite materials, plastics, resin and steel.

Travel is 3,000 to 10,000 mm (118 to 394 in) in X and 1,250 to 2,500 mm (49 to 98 in) in Z. The clamping table is optional on this model. It comes in widths from 2,500 to 4,000 mm (98 to 157 in), level with the floor or above it, and is rated at 10,000 kg/m². That is more than three times the area load of the FZP27 table, so heavy tooling is a normal load here rather than an exception.

The data sheet shows the VH10 head with a 34 kW spindle: 34 kW at S1, 41 kW at S6, 24,000 rpm, 39 Nm at S1 and 49 Nm at S6, on HSK-A63. Constant power is available from 8,260 to 24,000 rpm. The head's A axis swivels ±110° or +125°/-95°. Its C axis is limited to 300° at a Z of 1,250 mm and reaches 360° at a Z of 1,500 mm, a detail to check against the part before choosing the short Z. VH20 and VH30 heads are the alternatives.

All three linear axes run at up to 60 m/min with up to 3 m/s² of acceleration, gentler than the FZP37, which is listed at up to 5 m/s². Process cooling with minimum quantity lubrication and a dust extraction system for abrasive materials and resin are among the options Zimmermann names. Control is a choice of Heidenhain TNC7 or Siemens SINUMERIK ONE.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Stated linear accuracy of ≤10μm / ≤6μm (A/R, ISO 230-2) as standard and ≤8μm / ≤4μm in the increased-accuracy configuration
  • Thermo-symmetrical centre-guided portal with a stated thermostability of ≤ 30μm (ISO 230-3) in standard form
  • Optional table rated at 10,000 kg/m², level with the floor or above it
  • 34 kW (S1) VH10 spindle with HSK-A63 and constant power from 8,260 to 24,000 rpm
  • Z travel of up to 2,500 mm (98 in)

Limitations

  • C-axis range of the VH10 head is 300° at a Z of 1,250 mm; the full 360° needs a Z of 1,500 mm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What accuracy does Zimmermann state for the FZP32?

In standard accuracy the linear axes are listed at ≤10μm / ≤6μm (A/R to ISO 230-2), the rotary axes at 10 and 6 arc seconds, volumetric accuracy at ≤70μm / ≤50μm and thermostability at ≤ 30μm to ISO 230-3. The increased-accuracy configuration is listed at ≤8μm / ≤4μm linear, ≤50μm / ≤30μm volumetric and ≤ 20μm thermostability. Zimmermann says the values can be configured to standard or increased accuracy depending on customer requirements.

02 What are the working ranges of the FZP32?

X is 3,000 – 10,000 mm (118 – 394 in) and Z is 1,250 – 2,500 mm (49 – 98 in). Zimmermann's figures for the Y range are not consistent between its table and its text, so confirm Y when configuring. The optional table is 2,500 – 4,000 mm (98 – 157 in) wide.

03 Which heads and spindle are available on the FZP32?

The page lists the VH10, VH20 and VH30 heads. The data sheet details the VH10 with a 34 kW spindle: 34 kW at S1 and 41 kW at S6, 24,000 rpm, 39 Nm at S1 and 49 Nm at S6, HSK-A63. Its rotary axes move at 180°/s with 700°/s² of acceleration and a resolution of 0.0001°. Zimmermann adds that various heads and spindles are available with power ratings to suit the application.

04 What materials is the FZP32 meant for?

Zimmermann names aluminum, fiber composite materials, plastics, resin and steel, and says the machine is primarily suited to materials such as CFRP, GFRP, plastics, urethane and aluminum. Accessories for wet milling and chip conveyors can be added, and a dust extraction system is offered for abrasive materials and resin.

05 How much space does an FZP32 take?

Without peripherals, between 5,300 and 12,500 mm in length, 6,300 and 8,000 mm in width and 3,700 and 7,200 mm in height, depending on the travels. As a P-line machine its bed is recessed into the foundation, which gives ground-level access and allows automatic loading.
