Overview

Horizontal machining loads a spindle differently from vertical work: long boring bars, big face mills and side milling against a tall part. The AXA VHC 2 - XTS50 answers that with an SK 50 taper in the tilting head of the VHC 2 frame. Drive no. 131 gives 286 Nm and 45 kW at 40% DC as standard, and drive no. 133 raises that to 355 Nm and 56 kW.

The head is a B-axis unit that swivels ± 90°, optionally ± 100°, and positions in 0.001° steps. Full interpolation is an optional feature. A larger head takes up more room than the SK 40 one, and the table shows it. Vertical Z travel is 790 mm here against 820 mm on the VHC 2 - XTS, and in the horizontal position the spindle nose cannot come closer than 250 mm to the table.

Otherwise the envelope is that of the smaller model: X from 1,760 mm to 9,000 mm with the spindle vertical, 600 mm of Y, 850 mm of Z with the spindle horizontal. The fixed table has four 18 mm T-slots and a rating of 1,000 kg/m².

The XTS magazine is delivered with 26 pockets and can grow to 156. Tools may be 110 mm in diameter, 180 mm if neighbouring pockets stay empty, and a change takes approx. 7 s. AXA keeps the magazine towers stationary so that, in its words, only the travelling column is in motion.

  • Minimum distance from table to spindle nose in the horizontal position is 250 mm
  • Magazine capacity ends at 156 pockets
  • Spindle speed range is 4,000 rpm, or 9,000 rpm as an option
  • Pendulum travel is (X-axis - 500) / 2 mm, shorter per zone than on the SK 40 model

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What spindle options does the VHC 2 - XTS50 have?

Two SK 50 drives. No. 131 is standard with 4,000 rpm (optionally up to 9,000 rpm), 286 Nm and 45 kW. No. 133 is optional with 355 Nm and 56 kW at the same speeds. Torque and power are stated at 40% DC. BT 50, HSK A100 and C8 are the optional tool holders.

02 How close can the spindle get to the table?

With the spindle vertical, the distance from table to spindle nose is 0 to 790 mm. With the spindle horizontal it is 250 mm to 1,100 mm, so features lower than 250 mm above the table need the part raised on a fixture or the head set vertical.

03 Can the head interpolate during cutting?

AXA lists indexing of 0.001° as standard and marks "fully interpolating" as an optional feature. For 5 face machining or 5 axes simultaneous machining AXA also calls for a rotary table in combination with the tilting head.

04 How many tools does the machine hold?

26 pockets as standard, optionally expandable up to 156, which AXA illustrates with 3 fully equipped towers. Maximum tool length is 400 mm. The tool change time is approx. 7 s, and tools are pre-selected by a double gripper arm during machining.
