Overview

The Emco Megamill is the heavy gantry in the range, built for torque. Its standard spindle motor is 40 kW 1200 Nm, with 50 kW 1500 Nm (S1) / 61 kW 1800 Nm (S6) as the option. The longitudinal axis starts at 7500 mm and more (in steps of 2500 mm), cross travel is 4000 / 5000 / 6000 / 7000 mm and vertical travel 1500 / 2000 / 2500 mm.

Structure comes first on a machine like this. Emco lists a welded steel construction, a high-precision rack and pinion drive with zero clearance in the X and Y axes, and a Z-axis slide in box-in-box design with eightfold bearing. The ram section is 550 x 640 mm. A ram guided on all sides and held at eight points resists the bending and twisting that a long overhang produces in a heavy cut, which is what makes the motor torque usable at full vertical extension.

Emco names automotive moulds and dies and large aerospace workpieces as the target. For them the universal head offers 1000 / 1550 Nm (S1 / S6) at 15 ÷ 6000 rpm (option: 15 ÷ 8000 rpm), and four high-speed spindles are listed for finishing, the fastest being 42 / 55 kW, 67 / 87.5 Nm (S1 / S6), 24000 rpm, HSK 63-A. Heads change automatically from a magazine with 2 / 3 pockets.

Feed is 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) in machining and in rapid. The tool magazine is listed with 48 / 64 / 96 / 128 pockets, and coolant through the spindle with 20 l/min; 20 / 40 / 60 bar. Numeric control is Heidenhain or Siemens.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Spindle motor of 40 kW 1200 Nm, optionally 50 kW 1500 Nm (S1) / 61 kW 1800 Nm (S6)
  • Z-axis slide in box-in-box design with eightfold bearing
  • Zero-clearance rack and pinion drive in X and Y
  • Cross travel of 4000 / 5000 / 6000 / 7000 mm
  • Tool magazine with 48 / 64 / 96 / 128 pockets

Limitations

  • Feed rate of 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) is lower than the 40 m/min of the Dynamill
  • Smallest longitudinal travel is 7500 mm, so it is not a machine for small shops
  • Universal head speed is 15 ÷ 6000 rpm (option: 15 ÷ 8000 rpm); fast finishing needs a second head
  • Head changer and high-speed heads have to be specified with the order
06

Best For

Large automotive press dies and moulds Aerospace structural parts Heavy roughing of steel and cast iron on big workpieces Workpieces up to 7000 mm wide in the cross axis

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the Megamill?

Longitudinal travel starts at 7500 mm and more (in steps of 2500 mm). Cross travel is 4000 / 5000 / 6000 / 7000 mm and vertical travel 1500 / 2000 / 2500 mm. The vertical ram has a section of 550 x 640 mm.

02 How much spindle torque does the Megamill have?

The standard spindle motor is 40 kW 1200 Nm, and the option is 50 kW 1500 Nm (S1) / 61 kW 1800 Nm (S6). At the universal milling head the brochure lists 38 / 57 kW (S1 / S6) and 1000 / 1550 Nm (S1 / S6).

03 What milling heads can it carry?

A universal head with continuous positioning at 15 ÷ 6000 rpm (option: 15 ÷ 8000 rpm), a head with offset spindle, and universal and fork-type heads with high-speed spindles. Listed high-speed units include 45 / 58 kW, 300 / 372 Nm (S1 / S6), 12000 rpm, HSK 100-A and 70 / 86 kW, 160 / 220 Nm (S1 / S6), 15000 rpm, HSK 100-A.

04 How does the Megamill differ from the Powermill?

In the shared brochure the two have the same cross and vertical travels and the same heads. The Powermill starts shorter, at 6000 mm and more (in parts of 2000 mm), with a tool magazine of 48 / 64 / 80 / 120 pockets. The Megamill starts at 7500 mm and more (in steps of 2500 mm) with 48 / 64 / 96 / 128 pockets.
