Overview

The Hartford 5A-350XL combines the travels of a normal 3-axis vertical machining center with a small tilting rotary table. X travel is 650 mm (25.6 in), Y is 610 mm (24.0 in) and Z is 510 mm (20.1 in), while the table is only Ø 350 mm (13.8 in). Hartford lists it as a 4+1 axis machine.

The axis naming differs from the other small 5A models. Here the tilt is an A axis with a range of +30° ~ -120°, and the C axis is given as ±360°. A tilt that swings 120° to one side lets the spindle work well past the horizontal on that side, which helps with undercut features on a part that can be turned by C to present them.

Generous linear travel around a small table has a practical use: long tools, angle heads and probes have room to clear the part and the trunnion, and tall workpieces on a Ø 350 mm platter can still be reached from above and from the side. The table carries 200 kg (441 lb).

The spindle is #40, DDS at 10,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 rpm or built-in at 15,000 / 20,000 rpm. The motor is 7.5 / 11 kW with 15 / 18.5 kW as the option (Cont. / 30 min), the strongest listed among the small 5A machines. Tools are BT40, BBT, CAT or DIN in a 40 or 60 tool magazine. The bed is a one-piece casting that keeps way oil and coolant apart.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 650 x 610 x 510 mm linear travels around a Ø 350 mm (13.8 in) rotary table
  • A axis range of +30° ~ -120° with ±360° on C
  • Optional 15 / 18.5 kW spindle motor (Cont. / 30 min)
  • One-piece bed that separates oil and coolant
  • DDS spindle up to 20,000 rpm

Limitations

  • Listed as a 4+1 axis machine, not full simultaneous 5-axis
  • Table load of 200 kg (441 lb)
  • No HSK A63 shank in the list, unlike the 5A-32E
  • The built-in spindle stops at 20,000 rpm; the 5A-32E lists 24,000 rpm
  • Magazine of 40 or 60 tools, smaller than the 60 / 120 of the 5A-32E

Best For

Five-sided machining of tall, small-footprint parts Mould inserts and cores that need long tools Parts with undercuts on one side, using the 120° tilt Heavier cuts than other small 5-axis machines allow, with the 15 / 18.5 kW option

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the rotary axis ranges of the Hartford 5A-350XL?

The A axis travels +30° ~ -120° and the C axis ±360°. The table is Ø 350 mm (13.8 in) with T-slots listed as 12 x 90° (4) mm, and it carries 200 kg (441 lb).

02 How do the 5A-350XL travels compare with the 5A-32E?

The 5A-32E has 450 mm (17.7 in), 400 mm (15.7 in) and 360 mm (14.2 in) of X, Y and Z around a Ø 320 mm (12.6 in) table. The 5A-350XL has 650 mm (25.6 in), 610 mm (24.0 in) and 510 mm (20.1 in), so far more room around a table of nearly the same size.

03 What spindle power is available on the 5A-350XL?

7.5 / 11 kW as listed, with 15 / 18.5 kW optional, both continuous / 30 min. Speeds are 10,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 rpm for the DDS spindle and 15,000 / 20,000 rpm for the built-in spindle.

04 Is the 5A-350XL a full 5-axis machine?

Hartford's heading for it reads 5 Axis Vertical Machining Center (4+1 axis). Buyers who need simultaneous 5-axis interpolation should ask Hartford which control options apply, or look at the models listed without the 4+1 note, such as the 5A-65E.
