Overview

Surface finish is the design brief of the Nicolas Correa ORIX. It is a top gantry: the X guideways sit on raised side walls and only a light crossbeam moves, which keeps the moving mass low. The standard head is a five-axis twist head with an electrospindle, where most Correa mills start with an indexing universal head.

The spindle table shows the intent. Beside a 6,000 rpm, 52 kW, 1,375 Nm option on ISO-50, there are two electrospindles: 24,000 rpm with 35 kW and 60 Nm on HSK-63, and 12,000 rpm with 35 kW and 120 Nm on HSK-100. Those torque figures rule out heavy roughing with the fast spindles. They are for finishing passes with small cutters over large sculpted surfaces.

The side walls are a mixed structure of steel and what the maker calls HDC concrete, a high-density material with micro-fibres. Ram guidance is symmetrical, and a temperature compensation cycle covers the machine volume. On a mould that runs for days, thermal drift shows up as a visible step between passes, so these details matter more here than raw power.

Sizes are generous for a finishing machine. X travel is 3,500 - 24,500 mm, Y is 3,250 / 4,250 / 5,250 mm with 4,150 / 5,150 / 6,150 mm between columns, and vertical travel is 1,250 - 1,500 - 2,000 mm. All axes feed at 30 m/min. The table surface is 4,000 - 25,000 mm by 3,000 - 4,500 mm, rated 10,000 / 15,000 kg/m2.

For still higher axis speeds the XPIDER, the other top gantry in the range, lists 45 m/min.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Five-axis twist head with electrospindle is standard equipment
  • Electrospindle options of 24,000 rpm on HSK-63 and 12,000 rpm on HSK-100
  • Mixed steel and HDC concrete structure for damping and thermal stability
  • X travel up to 24,500 mm with up to 6,150 mm between columns
  • 30 m/min feed in X, Y and Z

Limitations

  • The 24,000 rpm spindle delivers 60 Nm and the 12,000 rpm spindle 120 Nm, too little for heavy roughing
  • Vertical travel is at most 2,000 mm
  • Raised side walls restrict side access for loading compared with an open gantry
  • Tool magazine, head-changer and rotary tables are optional equipment

Best For

Large moulds and dies finished in five axes Aerospace tooling and composite lay-up moulds Models and patterns with long finishing programs Light-alloy structures needing 24,000 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is a top gantry machine like the ORIX?

The longitudinal guideways are mounted on top of side walls, and the crossbeam travels along them above the work. On the ORIX those walls are a mixed structure of HDC concrete and steel. Only the beam, saddle and ram move, which helps dynamics and surface quality.

02 Which spindles are available on the ORIX?

Three are listed. Programmable speeds are 6,000 / 24,000 / 12,000 rpm, with maximum power of 52 / 35 / 35 kW and maximum torque of 1,375 / 60 / 120 Nm. The taper row reads ISO-50 / HSK-63 / HSK-100, in the same order.

03 How big is the working area of the ORIX?

X travel is 3,500 - 24,500 mm and Y is 3,250 / 4,250 / 5,250 mm. Vertical travel is 1,250 - 1,500 - 2,000 mm. The distance between columns is 4,150 / 5,150 / 6,150 mm and the table surface 4,000 - 25,000 mm by 3,000 - 4,500 mm.

04 Is the ORIX a five-axis machine as standard?

Yes. The standard equipment list opens with a five-axes twist head equipped with electrospindle. Other heads and an automatic head-changer are optional, so the machine can also carry a geared head for the 1,375 Nm roughing option.
