Overview

The AWEA AG5-1620 is a gantry type five-axis machining center whose X and Y axes run on linear motors instead of ball screws. Travels are 1,600 mm (63.0 in) in X, 2,000 mm (78.7 in) in Y and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) in Z over a fixed 1,600 x 2,000 mm (63.0 x 78.7 in) table, so the working area is wider than it is long. The cross beam does the moving. The part stays put.

Speed is the reason to pick this machine. X and Y rapid at 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) and Z at 50 m/min (1,969 ipm). AWEA describes the linear motors as giving low wear, zero backlash and high acceleration, and HEIDENHAIN linear scales are standard. Z is built differently: two servo motors and ballscrews, arranged symmetrically, carry the headstock. The RG5-1625 covers the same X and Z strokes with 24 m/min (945 ipm) rapids, which shows how much of the AG5's character comes from its drives.

At the tool end sits an Italian made two axes head, its fork cast in GGG40 graphite iron, with B and C turned by three direct drive motors. The built-in spindle takes HSK-A63 holders, reaches 24,000 rpm and is rated 42 / 55 kW (56.3 / 73.8 hp). That combination points at aluminium, composites and finishing passes in mould steel with small cutters, not at heavy roughing. According to the maker, the spindle is thermally stable within 10 minutes of a cold start and then grows by less than 0.01 mm.

Being the short model has measurable benefits. X positioning under the VDI standard is listed as P = 0.016 over full travel with repeatability of Ps = 0.012 mm, and the machine weighs 35,000 kg (77,160 lb). The AG5-3220 is listed at P = 0.025, Ps = 0.018 mm and 45,000 kg (99,206 lb). Before ordering, check the stacked height of fixture and part against the 50 ~ 1,050 mm (2.0 ~ 41.3 in) spindle nose to table distance, and heavy tooling plates against the 3,000 kg/m² table rating.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X and Y rapids of 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) from linear motors, against 24 m/min (945 ipm) on the ball screw RG5-1625
  • HEIDENHAIN linear scales are standard, and the JIS positioning accuracy is ± 0.010 mm over full travel
  • 24,000 rpm built-in HSK-A63 spindle rated 42 / 55 kW (56.3 / 73.8 hp)
  • Tightest X figures of the two AG5 sizes: P = 0.016 positioning and Ps = 0.012 mm repeatability under the VDI standard
  • Tool magazine fully isolated from the work area, behind an auto door that opens during tool changes only
  • 900 L coolant tank, larger than the 700 L tank of the RG5-1625

Limitations

  • Y travel stops at 2,000 mm (78.7 in); the RG5-1625 offers 2,500 mm (98.4 in)
  • HSK-A63 is the only taper in the table, while the RG5-1625 can be ordered with an HSK-A100 head
  • Tools are limited to 300 mm (11.8 in) in length and 7 kg (15 lb), which restricts long-reach cutters for deep cavities
  • X travel of 1,600 mm (63.0 in) is half that of the AG5-3220, so long parts need the larger machine
  • At 35,000 kg (77,160 lb), foundation and rigging have to be planned before delivery

Best For

High speed five-axis finishing of aluminium structural parts Mould and die surfaces cut with small HSK-A63 tools at 24,000 rpm Parts up to 1,600 x 2,000 x 1,000 mm (63.0 x 78.7 x 39.4 in) Jobs with many short positioning moves, where 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) rapids pay off

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What drives the linear axes of the AG5-1620?

X and Y are driven by linear motors, with rapids of 60 m/min (2,362 ipm). Z uses two symmetrically arranged servo motors and ballscrews and rapids at 50 m/min (1,969 ipm). The X axis is supported by 4 linear guideways and 12 sliding blocks, and roller type linear guide ways are used on X, Y and Z. HEIDENHAIN linear scales are standard.

02 How does the AG5-1620 compare with the RG5-1625?

Both have 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of X and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of Z and both weigh 35,000 kg (77,160 lb). The AG5-1620 has 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Y and 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) X and Y rapids. The RG5-1625 has 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of Y, 24 m/min (945 ipm) rapids and a choice of an HSK-A63 or an HSK-A100 head. Pick the AG5 for traverse speed, the RG5 for width and the bigger taper.

03 Which spindle does the AG5-1620 carry?

A built-in spindle in the two axes head, with an HSK-A63 taper, a top speed of 24,000 rpm and 42 / 55 kW (56.3 / 73.8 hp) at S1 / S6 40%. AWEA says other milling heads are available optionally, in high rotation speed, high torque or compact structure versions. The spindle, the B and C direct drive motors and the X and Y linear motors share a cooling system.

04 What size tools does the AG5-1620 magazine accept?

The table lists 24 T, a maximum tool length of 300 mm (11.8 in), a maximum tool weight of 7 kg (15 lb) and a maximum diameter of Ø100 / Ø125 mm (Ø3.9 / Ø4.9 in). The maker describes a 24T / 30T chain type ATC that puts no force on the spindle bearings during a change.

05 How much room does the AG5-1620 need between the columns?

The distance between columns is given as 3,000 (2,805) mm, the figure in brackets applying with the water eliminator. AWEA states that the gantry layout needs 40% less floor space than other bridge type machines with similar travel ranges, because the tool moves on every axis and the table stays fixed.
