Overview
The Hermle C 650 is a large simultaneous 5-axis machining center. Travels are 1,050 mm in X, 900 mm in Y and 600 mm in Z, with 775 mm of maximum vertical clearance above the table and a Ø1,100 mm collision circle with the A-axis at 0°.
The table is specified two ways, and the choice determines what kind of shop the machine serves. A swivelling rotary table of Ø900 × 750 mm gives full 5-axis motion, ±115° in A and a C-axis turning at 25 rpm, carrying up to 1,500 kg. A rigid clamping table of 1,250 × 982 mm gives up the rotary axes but doubles capacity to 3,000 kg. Workpieces on the rotary table reach Ø900 mm by 600 mm high. Buyers doing genuine simultaneous 5-axis work take the rotary table and accept the lower load; shops whose work is mostly large, heavy and prismatic get more machine from the clamping table.
Spindle options are counterintuitive and worth reading carefully. The 15,000 rpm SK 40 and 16,000 rpm HSK A 63 spindles both give 20 kW and 173 Nm. The 20,000 rpm HSK A 63 spindle gives 42 kW and 148 Nm at 20% c.d.f. The fastest spindle is therefore also the most powerful, trading a modest amount of torque for a large gain in available power — but on a duty-cycle rating, so continuous heavy cutting should be planned against the lower figures.
Rapids are 35 m/min on all three linear axes with 6 m/s² acceleration and 7,000 N of feed force. Positioning uncertainty is stated as ≤ 0.006 mm to ISO 230-2 on X, Y and Z.
The magazine holds 42 pockets as standard, extended by ZM 30, ZM 50, ZM 88 k, ZM 216 and ZM 528 units up to a 168 kg magazine load. Tools reach 350 mm long, Ø80 mm, or Ø125 mm with adjacent pockets allocated, at 8 kg. Chip-to-chip is approximately 6 s.
Control is Heidenhain TNC7. The machine weighs approximately 15.4 t and draws up to 49 kVA at 400 V / 50 Hz or 460 V / 60 Hz. It suits aerospace, mould and die, and precision contract work on large components.
