DMS Redwood5 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the DMS Redwood5 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from DMS or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The DMS Redwood5 is an open-architecture 5-axis machine driven by a dual helical rack and pinion, sized by the buyer from a list of bridge strokes and depths. Bridge strokes of 5, 8, 10 and 12 ft are listed, and depth comes in multiples of 5 ft up to 100 ft, with 12 ft and 22 ft besides. Z is 48 in or 72 in (1,219 or 1,829 mm).

Open architecture means there is no enclosure around the work, so cranes, forklifts and operators can reach the table from any side. That suits one-off patterns and large tools that are craned in. Where dust has to be contained, the enclosed Glacier5 is the DMS alternative, and it lists the same 8-20 kW spindle range and the same six head units.

Those heads are the Tilt K Plus, Tilt H Plus, Tilt V and Tilt W and the DMS Standard Yoke and DMS Cast Yokes, with a maximum of 20 kW at up to 24,000 rpm. B tilts 115° or 130°. C turns 363° each way on a DMS head, with continuous rotation as an option, or 320° on a Hiteco head. DMS rates the machine for heavy-duty cycles in a production environment, around the clock.

Average speed over the three linear axes is 1,333 in/min (33.9 m/min). Motor encoders are absolute, apart from the rotaries when continuous C is ordered, and scales are available as an option; the HMI and NC are both Fagor. Tools sit in a rack or carousel. The published Y stroke and tool count differ between the product page and the data sheet, and the X stroke table reads up to 20 ft against a longest listed bridge stroke of 12 ft, so have DMS confirm all three.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Dual helical rack and pinion drive, which DMS credits for the precision and speed of the model
  • Open architecture gives access to the table from every side for craned-in work
  • Spindles of 8-20 kW at up to 24,000 rpm on six listed head units
  • Z stroke of 48 in or 72 in (1,219 or 1,829 mm)
  • Depth in multiples of 5 ft up to 100 ft

Limitations

  • No enclosure: dust control depends on extraction at the head and on the building
  • Rack and pinion throughout; the ball-screw bridge of the Glacier5 and Teton5 is not listed
  • Listed bridge strokes stop at 12 ft, short of the 20 ft bridge strokes listed for the Mammoth5
  • Continuous C rotation replaces the absolute rotary encoders with incremental ones
06

Best For

Large patterns and tools loaded by crane onto an open table Long 5-axis parts, with depth available in 5 ft steps up to 100 ft Round-the-clock production cycles in composites, aluminum and plastics Tall work that needs 48 in or 72 in of Z

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does open architecture mean on the Redwood5?

DMS describes the Redwood5 as having an open architecture design, in contrast to the fully enclosed Glacier5. The work area is not boxed in, which makes it easier to load large or awkward parts and to reach the table from any side, at the cost of the dust containment an enclosure gives.

02 What sizes is the DMS Redwood5 offered in?

The size list gives bridge strokes of 5, 8, 10 or 12 ft and depths in multiples of 5 ft up to 100 ft, plus 12 ft and 22 ft. Z stroke is 48 in or 72 in (1,219 or 1,829 mm). The X row of the stroke table reads 5 ft minimum and 20 ft maximum, so confirm the widest bridge with DMS.

03 What drive system does the Redwood5 use?

The transmission is rack and pinion, and DMS specifies a dual helical rack and pinion drive. Average speed across the three linear axes is listed as 1,333 in/min (33.9 m/min). Scales are available as an option.

04 Which heads and spindles are available on the Redwood5?

Six units are listed: Tilt K Plus, Tilt H Plus, Tilt V, Tilt W, DMS Standard Yoke and DMS Cast Yokes. Spindle power runs from 8 to 20 kW and the maximum speed is 24,000 rpm. B is (+/-) 115° / 130°; C is (+/-) 363° on a DMS head, optionally continuous, or (+/-) 320° on a Hiteco head.
