Overview
The Fryer 5X-120 is the heavy-cutting member of the 5X articulating-head series. Against the 5X-100 it moves from linear ways to box ways, from a 35 hp (26.1 kW) spindle to 55 hp (41.0 kW) peak, and from 4,500 lb of axis thrust to 10,800 lb. Travels are 120 x 50 x 40 in (3,048 x 1,270 x 1,016 mm) over a 40 x 126 in (1,016 x 3,200 mm) table.
Fryer says the series is designed for cutting steel and tough alloys, and this is the model where the figures support it best. The spindle delivers 90 ft-lb (122 Nm) at 2,000 rpm and runs 200 - 15,000 rpm on an HSK-63A taper. The head tilts further than on the smaller machines, with an A travel of +/- 105°, so the tool can reach slightly below horizontal for undercut features.
The frame is that of Fryer's large open verticals. Table size, 50 in (1,270 mm) of Y reach and the 51 in (1,295 mm) from spindle centre to column match the dimensions of the VB-120 with its extended Y option, and the table load of 7,500 lb (3,402 kg) is in the same class. That means energy-sector and heavy-equipment parts, such as valve bodies, manifolds and large weldments, can be machined on five sides and at compound angles in one clamping.
Speed is the trade. Rapids are 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) on X, Y and Z. The door opens 125 in (3,175 mm), the machine weighs 34,000 lb (15,422 kg) and it occupies 285 x 135 in (7,239 x 3,429 mm).
