Overview

On the Hartford Aero-2232B the table is wider than it is long. It measures 2,200 x 2,700 mm (86.6 x 106.3 in), under 2,200 mm (86.6 in) of X travel and 3,200 mm (126.0 in) of Y. Hartford classes the machine as a gantry type 5-faced machining center.

The layout makes sense for parts that are broad and short: ring-shaped housings, flanges, turbine casings, large square die sets. The gantry needs to travel only a short distance in X, while the long Y axis and the Z axis on four linear guideways do most of the positioning. A table rating of 5,000 kg/m² allows such parts to be heavy.

Hartford puts a screw support mechanism on the Aero. Its stated purpose is to improve sagging from the dead weight of the screw and to enhance positioning accuracy and screw lifespan; the maker adds that the screw specification is increased by one level to lift static rigidity. On this model the long screw is the Y one.

The spindle taper is #50 with BT-50 shanks (CAT50, DIN69871A or BBT50 on request). The gear head runs 6,000 rpm, optionally 8,000 rpm, and Z travel is 1,000 mm or 1,200 mm. The smaller sister model, the Aero-2225B, has a 2,200 x 2,000 mm (86.6 x 78.7 in) table and 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of Y.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2,200 x 2,700 mm (86.6 x 106.3 in) table with 3,200 mm (126.0 in) of Y travel
  • Screw support mechanism and upsized screws, per Hartford
  • Table rating of 5,000 kg/m² for heavy parts
  • Z axis on four linear guideways

Limitations

  • X travel of 2,200 mm (86.6 in) rules out long parts
  • Gear-head speed is 6,000 rpm unless the 8,000 rpm option is ordered
  • No spindle power row for the gear head in the table

Best For

Ring-shaped housings, flanges and casings Large square die sets and bolsters Broad, short and heavy workpieces

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the Aero-2232B table?

2,200 x 2,700 mm (86.6 x 106.3 in), rated at 5,000 kg/m². X travel is 2,200 mm and Y travel 3,200 mm (126.0 in), so the machine is wider across the gantry than along its travel.

02 What is the screw support mechanism on the Aero-2232B?

A support for the ballscrews. Hartford states that it improves screw dead weight sagging and enhances the positioning accuracy and lifespan of the screw, and that the screw specification is increased by one level to lift static rigidity.

03 Which heads does the Aero-2232B use for side faces?

An auto universal head, a 90 degree head or an extension head. They are exchanged by a full automatic head changer with an independent head magazine, and Hartford gives the C-axis indexing as 1 degree.

04 How does the Aero-2232B differ from the Aero-432B?

In length. The Aero-432B has the same 3,200 mm (126.0 in) Y travel and 2,700 mm table width but 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of X travel on a 4,000 x 2,700 mm (157.5 x 106.3 in) table.
