Overview

The Fryer SX-60 offers 60 x 30 x 35 in (1,524 x 762 x 889 mm) of travel under a tilting spindle head, and its 35 in of Z is the detail that matters most. A head that swivels +/- 110° needs height: with the spindle laid over toward horizontal, the 11 in (279 mm) between spindle nose and centre of rotation swings out sideways, and the machine must lift the head clear of the part first. The SX-60 has that height, where the SX-45 has 25 in (635 mm) of Z.

In practice this makes the SX-60 the model for 5-sided work on bulky parts. Spindle nose to table runs from 37 to 2 in (940 - 51 mm). The machine table is 24 x 67 in (610 x 1,702 mm) with a load rating of 7,500 lb (3,402 kg), and the listed built-in rotary table size is 24 in (610 mm). The flush mounted table leaves the T-slot surface free, so the same machine takes a long 3-axis job across the whole table one day and a 5-axis part centred on the rotary the next. Fryer lists use as 3 or 5-axis among the series features.

Cutting data are those of the series: 40 hp (29.8 kW) peak, 100 - 18,000 rpm, 85 ft-lb (115 Nm) at 850 rpm, Big Plus CAT-40. Peak thrust is 4,955 lb in X and Y and 6,193 lb in Z, on roller type linear ways.

Full 5 axis contouring is offered with the Siemens SINUMERIK ONE or the Fanuc 31i B5. The SX-60 weighs 21,500 lb (9,752 kg), opens 62 in (1,575 mm) at the door and occupies 161 x 112 in (4,089 x 2,845 mm).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 35 in (889 mm) of Z travel, giving the tilting head room over tall parts
  • Machine table of 24 x 67 in (610 x 1,702 mm) rated 7,500 lb (3,402 kg)
  • Flush mounted rotary table leaves the full table usable for 3-axis work
  • 6,193 lb of peak Z thrust
  • 18,000 rpm spindle with 85 ft-lb (115 Nm) at 850 rpm

Limitations

  • Rotary table type and size must be ordered as an option
  • Rotary rapid traverse is 33 rpm on B and 22 rpm on C
  • Occupies 161 x 112 in (4,089 x 2,845 mm) and weighs 21,500 lb (9,752 kg)
  • Tools are limited to 13 in (330 mm) in length and 15 lb

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the Fryer SX-60?

X, Y and Z are 60 x 30 x 35 in (1,524 x 762 x 889 mm). The head has a B travel of +/- 110° and the rotary table a C travel of +/- 360°. Spindle nose to table ranges from 37 to 2 in (940 - 51 mm), and the spindle centre is 31 in (787 mm) from the column.

02 Can the SX-60 be used as an ordinary 3-axis machine?

Yes. Fryer lists use as 3 or 5-axis for the SX series. With the head vertical the machine has a 24 x 67 in (610 x 1,702 mm) table, a 40-station tool changer and rapids of 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) in X and Y.

03 How does the SX-60 compare with the SX-45?

The SX-45 has 45 x 25 x 25 in (1,143 x 635 x 635 mm) of travel, a table load of 5,500 lb (2,495 kg) and weighs 17,500 lb (7,938 kg). The SX-60 adds X and Y travel, has 35 in (889 mm) of Z, carries 7,500 lb (3,402 kg) and weighs 21,500 lb (9,752 kg). Spindle, head and tool changer are the same.

04 How accurate are the rotary axes on the SX-60?

The table gives positioning accuracy for B and C as 15 seconds of arc, with 5 seconds of arc in brackets, and repeatability as 5 seconds of arc, with 2 seconds of arc in brackets. Linear accuracy is +/- 0.0002 in (0.0051 mm). Fryer does not say on the sheet what the bracketed figures require.
