Overview

The Huron MX 4 is a small five-axis machining centre driven by linear motors on Y and Z, with rapids of 120 m/min on those axes and 60 m/min on X. Travels are 750 x 700 x 500 mm (29.5 x 27.6 x 19.7 in), and the 24,000 rpm HSK 63-A spindle works over a 400 x 400 mm table that tilts and rotates.

It stands apart from the other MX models, which are large universal-head machines. Here both rotary axes are in the table, on a 45° plane. A tilts from -45° to +180° and C turns 360°, each at 100 rpm, and Huron quotes 3,200 Nm of motor torque and 7,000 Nm of clamping torque for them. The largest workpiece is 440 x 420 mm in plan and 350 mm high.

Huron explains its drive choices. Linear motors on Y and Z raise traverse speed, acceleration and tool-change speed, and the moving structures are kept light and rigid to exploit them. X keeps a ballscrew, which Huron says removes the risk of pollution on that axis. The machine is anchored to the floor.

The spindle is rated 25 kW and 40 Nm with a characteristic speed of 6,000 rpm. Positioning is 0.004 mm on the linear axes and 7.2 sec on A and C. Thirty-six tools up to 250 mm long and 5 kg are carried. The footprint is 4,240 x 4,800 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How fast is the Huron MX 4?

Rapid feedrate is 60 m/min on X and 120 m/min on Y and Z. The Y and Z axes use linear motors; X uses a ballscrew. The rotary axes A and C both turn at 100 rpm, and the spindle reaches 24,000 rpm.

02 What size workpiece fits the MX 4?

Huron gives the workpiece dimension as 440 x 420 mm with a height of 350 mm. The table itself is 400 x 400 mm and rotates on a 45° plane. Linear travels are 750, 700 and 500 mm in X, Y and Z.

03 Why does the MX 4 use a ballscrew on X?

Huron's feature list says the ballscrew on the X axis is there to eliminate the risks of pollution, while linear motors on Y and Z increase speed of movement, acceleration and tool-change speed. The machine is also anchored to the floor for rigidity and dynamics.

04 What are the spindle figures for the MX 4?

HSK 63-A taper, 24,000 rpm maximum, 25 kW and 40 Nm, with a characteristic speed of 6,000 rpm. This is a high-speed finishing spindle. The larger MX 8 M, by contrast, has 277 Nm at 14,000 rpm.
