Overview

Sixteen metres of X travel puts two demands on a moving column machine: both columns must stay in step, and the shop has to supply it. The AWEA MCP-16050, with 16,000 mm (629.9 in) of X and 5,400 mm (212.6 in) of Y, is where those questions start to dominate the purchase.

On synchronisation, AWEA fits the X-axis with dual linear scales. Combined with what the maker calls Simultaneous Control Technology, they are there to prevent misalignment of the moving columns. What the table does not give is a positioning accuracy or repeatability value for any MCP model. A buyer with tolerance requirements over a 16,000 x 3,800 mm (629.9 x 149.6 in) table should ask for the acceptance figures in writing.

On services, the published requirement is 220 ± 10 % Vac at 80 kVA, with compressed air at 5 ~ 8 (5) kg/cm². Tank sizes are 4,000 liter for coolant, 100 liter for hydraulics and 6 liter for lubrication. None of these change with bed length, so the MCP-16050 is listed with the same supply as the MCP-8050 despite its table being twice as long.

The cutting end is common to the group. A BBT50 spindle with a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor, a 40T magazine, 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z. X and Z rapid at 10 m/min (394 ipm) and Y at 7.5 m/min (295 ipm), so a move from one end of the bed to the other takes long enough that operations are best ordered by position along the part.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Dual linear scales on the X-axis to keep the two moving columns aligned
  • 16,000 mm (629.9 in) of X travel with 5,400 mm (212.6 in) of Y
  • Power requirement of 80 kVA, the same as the 8,000 mm MCP-8050
  • 4,000 liter coolant tank and 100 liter hydraulic tank

Limitations

  • No positioning accuracy or repeatability figures are published
  • Rapids of 10 / 7.5 / 10 m/min (394 / 295 / 394 ipm) make end-to-end moves slow on a bed this long
  • The supply is listed as 220 ± 10 % Vac, so sites on other voltages need a transformer
  • Coolant capacity stays at 4,000 liter although the table is 16,000 mm long
06

Best For

Long structural parts up to 16,000 mm Rail, wing and hull components machined in one clamping Several shorter workpieces set up along one table Plants that can supply 80 kVA at 220 Vac

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the MCP-16050 keep its two columns aligned over 16,000 mm?

AWEA states that the X-axis features dual linear scales which, in combination with its Simultaneous Control Technology, prevent misalignment of the moving columns. Each side of the bridge is measured directly instead of relying on one side's position alone.

02 What positioning accuracy does AWEA state for the MCP-16050?

None in the published specification table. It lists travels, spindle, feeds, magazine and services but no accuracy or repeatability row for any MCP model. The X-axis has dual linear scales, and AWEA describes them as ensuring dynamic accuracy, but a figure has to be requested from the maker.

03 What power, air and coolant supply does the MCP-16050 need?

The table gives 220 ± 10 % Vac at 80 kVA and a pneumatic pressure requirement of 5 ~ 8 (5) kg/cm². The coolant tank holds 4,000 liter, the hydraulic tank 100 liter and the lubrication tank 6 liter.

04 Do the larger MCP models need more power than the smaller ones?

Not according to AWEA's table. The MCP-16050 and the MCP-8050 are both listed at 80 kVA with a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) spindle motor, although X travel is 16,000 mm (629.9 in) on one and 8,000 mm (315.0 in) on the other.
