Overview

The Matec 30PTT | 40PTT is the direct-drive member of MATEC's stationary gantry family. Its 2-axis fork head has direct drive in both axes, and MATEC names the applications plainly: volume machining in high-strength light metals, and tool and mould making with higher demands on precision and surface quality.

The head is listed with a swivel radius of 225 or 280 mm (8.9 or 11.0 in), a C axis that turns 360° and an A axis of ±110°. Spindle speeds go to 24,000 rpm in this version, beside 10,000 and 15,000 rpm, and the series maxima of 96 kW (128.7 hp) and 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) apply. Tool weight is given as 20 kg (44 lb) and tool length as 450 mm (17.7 in).

Everything below the head matches the sibling machines. The table moves under a fixed gantry on ball screws at 30 m/min (1,181 ipm), and the X axis can be ordered with a linear drive or toothed rack drive instead. X travel is 3,750 to 6,750 mm in four steps, Y is 3,400 or 4,400 mm, Z is 1,500, 1,800 or 2,100 mm. Table load is up to 4,000 kg (8,818 lb).

For a shop cutting aluminium structural parts, the combination that matters is the 24,000 rpm spindle with a direct-drive head, because the head has to keep up with the feed rates such a spindle allows. A magazine extended toward the maximum of 680 places and the optional head changer with four heads cover long unattended programs.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Direct drive in both axes of the fork head
  • Spindle speeds up to 24,000 rpm
  • C axis with 360° of rotation and A axis of ±110°
  • Swivel radius of 225 or 280 mm (8.9 or 11.0 in), shorter than a universal head
  • X axis available with linear drive or toothed rack drive

Limitations

  • A axis range of ±110° is less than the ±180° of the universal head on the 30PTU | 40PTU
  • Table load stops at 4,000 kg (8,818 lb), depending on table size and drive system
  • MATEC does not state which spindle delivers the 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) maximum, so torque at 24,000 rpm must be asked for
  • Rapid traverse on the standard ball screw drive is 30 m/min (1,181 ipm)

Best For

Volume machining of high-strength light metals Tool and mould making with high demands on surface quality Large aluminium structural parts at spindle speeds up to 24,000 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is a torque fork head?

On this machine it is a 2-axis fork head with direct drive in both axes, as MATEC states on the product page. The C axis rotates 360° and the A axis ±110°, each with a direct measuring system, and the swivel radius is 225 or 280 mm (8.9 or 11.0 in).

02 Which spindle speeds are offered on the 30PTT | 40PTT?

10,000, 15,000 or 24,000 rpm. MATEC gives a maximum power of 96 kW (128.7 hp) and a maximum torque of 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) for the main spindle without assigning them to a speed. The performance class is HSK63 or HSK100.

03 What is the 30PTT | 40PTT intended for?

MATEC names volume machining in high-strength light metals and tool and mould making with higher demands on precision and surface quality. Both rely on fast, accurate head movement, which is the reason for direct drives in the A and C axes.

04 How large is the work area?

Travels are 3,750, 4,750, 5,750 or 6,750 mm in X, 3,400 or 4,400 mm in Y and 1,500, 1,800 or 2,100 mm in Z. The clamping table is 2,000 to 5,000 mm long and 2,000 or 3,000 mm wide. Clearance height is 1,350, 1,650 or 2,050 mm and clearance width 2,320 or 3,320 mm (91.3 or 130.7 in).
