Overview

The Haas GM-1XT-5AX is the extended-table version of the GM-1-5AX gantry mill. X-travel grows from 3,073 mm to 3,613 mm (121 to 142 in) and the table stretches to 3,664 x 1,346 mm (144.3 x 53 in). Everything else carries across unchanged: the 24,000 RPM 15 hp spindle, 1,549 mm (61 in) of Y, 610 mm (24 in) of Z and 800 ipm rapids.

Twenty-one extra inches sounds marginal until you're trimming a panel that's 130 inches long. Large aerospace skins, marine components and full-length patterns either fit or they don't, and for shops working at that scale the XT is the only version worth considering.

US$339,995 is a US$40,000 premium over the standard GM-1-5AX. That's a lot of money for length alone, so the decision should come down to a straightforward measurement of your longest part rather than a general preference for more capacity.

The machine's character is unchanged, which means the same caveats apply. 14.9 Nm (11 ft-lbf) of spindle torque restricts it to composites, aluminium, patterns and soft materials. Twenty-four inches of Z keeps it to relatively flat work. Bought for what it's designed to do, it's effective; bought as a general-purpose large 5-axis machine, it will disappoint.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,613 mm (142 in) of X-travel handles full-length aerospace skins and marine panels
  • 3,664 mm (144.3 in) table length gives usable fixturing space across the whole envelope
  • 24,000 RPM spindle and 800 ipm rapids suit high-speed trimming of light materials
  • 5-axis motion allows contour trimming of formed parts without repositioning
  • 2,722 kg (6,000 lb) table load supports large trim fixtures and vacuum tooling

Limitations

  • US$40,000 over the standard GM-1-5AX buys length only, with no gain in power, Y or Z
  • 14.9 Nm (11 ft-lbf) spindle torque excludes steel roughing
  • 610 mm (24 in) Z-travel limits it to relatively flat components
  • Footprint is substantial and grows with the extended table, so floor planning matters
  • Specialist composite gantry builders offer better integrated dust and vacuum systems
05

Best For

Full-length aerospace skin and panel trimming beyond 120 inches Marine and transport composite components at full part length Long pattern, plug and tooling-board machining Shops whose only constraint on the standard GM-1-5AX is part length Large-format 5-axis work in aluminium, foam and composite

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Haas GM-1XT-5AX cost?

Haas lists US$339,995 as of August 2026, roughly US$40,000 above the standard GM-1-5AX. Extraction and vacuum fixturing for composite work are additional.

02 Is the extended table worth US$40,000?

Only if your parts need it. The XT adds 21 inches of X and nothing else. Measure your longest component against the 121-inch standard machine first, because that's the entire decision.

03 What materials does it suit?

Composites, aluminium sheet and panel, tooling board, foam and patterns. The 24,000 RPM spindle produces 11 ft-lbf, which is a high-speed light-cutting arrangement rather than a metal-removal one.

04 Does it need dust extraction?

For composite and tooling-board work, effectively yes. Machining carbon fibre and board produces abrasive dust that damages ways and bearings without proper extraction, and most installations budget for it from the start.
