Overview
The Haas UMC-400SS is the super-speed variant of the UMC-400, pairing the compact 432 x 279 x 330 mm (17 x 11 x 13 in) travel envelope with a 15,000 RPM inline direct-drive spindle. The SS designation brings faster spindle speed, faster rapids, and a quicker tool changer compared to the standard UMC-400, making this the machine for shops running small aluminum 5-axis parts where every second of cycle time counts.
The 11.2 kW (15 hp) spindle delivers 62 Nm (46 ft-lbf) of torque at 1,700 RPM while spinning to 15,000 RPM. That nearly 85% speed increase over the standard 8,100 RPM dramatically improves surface footage on small-diameter end mills in aluminum, which is exactly the kind of work this machine was designed for. The CT/BT 40 taper accepts standard tooling shared across any Haas 40-taper VMC.
The trunnion carries a 230 mm (9.1 in) platter with a 45.4 kg (100 lb) capacity. The B-axis tilts from +120 to -45 degrees with 407 Nm of continuous torque, and the C-axis provides full 360-degree rotation with 285 Nm of continuous torque. Maximum part swing is 368 mm (14.5 in). These are the same robust trunnion specs as the standard UMC-400, unchanged by the SS upgrade.
Rapids run at 30.5 m/min (1,200 ipm) on all three linear axes, a 33% improvement over the standard UMC-400's 22.9 m/min. The 30+1 SMTC posts faster tool change times than the standard model, cutting overhead on multi-tool jobs. At approximately 3,411 kg (7,520 lb), the machine has the same compact footprint as the standard UMC-400 and requires only 220 VAC at 40 amps. The UMC-400SS is the highest-performance compact 5-axis machine Haas offers, targeting medical device, dental, and precision component manufacturers who need speed and simultaneous 5-axis capability in a small package. Specs derived from Haas Automation published data for the UMC-400 and UMC SS platform.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 15,000 RPM spindle delivers nearly 85% more speed than the standard UMC-400 for dramatically faster aluminum finishing with small tools
- 30.5 m/min (1,200 ipm) rapids are 33% faster than the standard model, reducing non-cutting time on small-part programs
- Compact 3,411 kg footprint fits in shops with limited floor space and runs on standard 40-amp shop power
- Same proven trunnion with full simultaneous 5-axis capability for complex medical, dental, and precision components
- Faster SMTC tool change times cut overhead on multi-tool medical and dental parts
- 40-taper tooling compatibility lets shops share tooling with existing Haas VMCs
Limitations
- 45.4 kg (100 lb) platter capacity and 9.1-inch platter diameter restrict work to small parts only
- 15 HP spindle power limits aggressive roughing in stainless and titanium compared to the larger UMC-500SS
- Price premium of roughly $23K over the standard UMC-400 requires volume to justify the speed upgrade
- 432 mm X-travel constrains part size; shops needing more room should consider the UMC-500SS

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts at approximately $179,995. With through-spindle coolant, probing, and production options, expect $210,000 to $230,000 for a fully configured machine.
02
The SS version increases spindle speed from 8,100 to 15,000 RPM, boosts rapids from 22.9 to 30.5 m/min, and adds a faster SMTC tool changer. Spindle power and torque remain the same at 15 HP and 62 Nm. The trunnion capacity and travel envelope are identical. The SS costs roughly $23K more.
03
Yes, but the 15 HP spindle and compact envelope are designed primarily for small parts. It will cut steel and titanium at lower RPMs, but the UMC-500SS or UMC-750SS are better choices for heavier materials and larger parts.
04
The UMC-500SS has 610 x 406 x 406 mm of travel versus 432 x 279 x 330 mm, a 30 HP spindle with 122 Nm of torque versus 15 HP and 62 Nm, and a larger platter with 500 lb capacity. Choose the UMC-400SS for small parts that fit within its envelope; the UMC-500SS for medium-sized work.
