Overview
The Starrag Ecospeed F 1540 is a 5-axis high-performance cutting center built for high-speed machining of medium-to-large aluminum structural components in the aerospace industry. As the smaller sibling of the F 2040 FMS, the F 1540 delivers the same Sprint Z3 parallel kinematic head technology and extreme aluminum metal removal rates in a more compact standalone package.
The F 1540 shares the Ecospeed core technology: the Sprint Z3 parallel kinematic machining head with ±45-degree angular capability. The real 120 kW spindle power enables sustained heavy roughing passes in aluminum alloys. HSK-A63/A80 tooling and a WERO rack-type magazine with up to 129 or 300 pockets support complex multi-tool programs.
The 4,000 x 1,500 mm table with 3,000 kg workpiece capacity handles wing ribs, floor beams, door surrounds, and other mid-sized structural components. The F 1540 can be standalone or integrated into larger FMS installations with pallet handling.
New machines typically price between $2,500,000 and $4,500,000. The machine competes with gantry-style 5-axis machines from Fives (Forest-Line), Jobs (FFG), and SNK for aerospace aluminum structural machining.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Sprint Z3 parallel kinematic head provides unmatched acceleration for high-speed 5-axis contouring
- 120 kW sustained spindle power enables extreme metal removal rates in aluminum
- Same proven Ecospeed technology as the F 2040 FMS in a more accessible package
- 4,000 x 1,500 mm table accommodates the highest-volume mid-size structural parts
- Up to 300-pocket tool magazine supports complex multi-feature programs
- Proven production platform at major aerostructure suppliers
Limitations
- Starting price above $2.5 million limits the F 1540 to committed aerospace production programs
- Optimized primarily for aluminum; shops machining mixed materials need separate machines
- Large footprint requires dedicated floor space with proper foundation engineering
- Sprint Z3 head requires specialized Starrag service technicians

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Both share the Sprint Z3 head and 120 kW spindle, but the F 2040 FMS includes integrated pallet handling. The F 1540 offers a lower entry price with the same core machining performance.
02
Metal removal rates exceeding 8,000 cm³/min in aluminum under optimal conditions.
03
While it can technically cut titanium, it is not designed for it. Its dynamics are optimized for high-speed aluminum machining.
04
Major aerospace manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers producing structural components for Airbus, Boeing, and military aircraft programs.
