Overview

The AXA VSR 2 is a compact 5-axis travelling column machining centre with a 2-axis tilting rotary table as standard equipment. Travels are 1,100 x 600 x 700 mm (43.3 x 23.6 x 27.6 in) and the faceplate measures 550 x 550 mm. AXA presents it as a new machine series for 5-axis and 5-sided machining of smaller components.

Its unusual feature is the direction in which the table tilts. The swivel axis lies along Y, not along X as on most trunnion tables, so the table tips sideways as seen from the operator door. AXA's argument is visibility: the operator can see possible interference contours during machining. The same layout lets a robot or pallet system feed parts from the side through a lifting door without lifting them over the trunnion.

Both table axes have direct drives and direct measuring systems. The swivel range is +/- 110°, the swivel axis turns at up to 60 rpm and the rotary axis at up to 100 rpm. Load capacity depends on the mode: 350 kg in simultaneous machining and 500 kg with the axes clamped.

Spindle drive no. 110 is standard, with 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC and an optional 14,000 rpm. Drives no. 111 and no. 113 raise torque to 191 Nm and 255 Nm. The XTS magazine tower holds 22 tools and can be fitted with up to three chains for 60 tools each. AXA quotes a footprint of around 12 m² and says the machine can stand with its back against a wall.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2-axis tilting rotary table as standard, with direct drives and direct measuring systems on both axes
  • Table swivels around the Y-axis, which AXA says gives an unobstructed view of interference contours
  • Positioning accuracy of +/- 0.0075 mm per 1,000 mm as the listed standard
  • Footprint of around 12 m², and installation directly against a rear wall
  • Up to 180 tools from one XTS tower with three chains
  • 700 mm of Z travel on a compact machine

Limitations

  • Table load is 350 kg in simultaneous machining and 500 kg only with the axes clamped
  • The faceplate is 550 x 550 mm, so the machine is limited to smaller components
  • Only SK 40 and HSK A63 are listed; there is no SK 50 version
  • The robot interface and mirrored magazine layout are options

Best For

5-axis and 5-sided machining of smaller components Automated cells with side loading by robot, drawer or pallet system Shops with limited floor space Parts up to 350 kg machined in simultaneous 5-axis mode

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is special about the rotary table of the VSR 2?

It tilts around the Y-axis instead of the X-axis. AXA says this gives the operator an unobstructed view of potential interference contours and allows lateral workpiece feeding without complex lifting or lowering. The swivel range is +/- 110° and both axes are directly driven.

02 How much weight can the table carry?

350 kg (772 lb) in simultaneous machining and 500 kg (1,102 lb) with the axes clamped. The faceplate is 550 x 550 mm with six 14 mm T-slots at 80 mm spacing. AXA also offers additional faceplates with zero-point clamping systems or T-slots.

03 Which spindles are available?

Drive no. 110 is standard: 6,000 rpm, optionally up to 14,000 rpm, with 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC. Drive no. 111 gives 191 Nm and 40 kW with the same speeds. Drive no. 113 gives 255 Nm and 40 kW with up to 10,000 rpm. The taper is SK 40, with HSK A63 optional.

04 How many tools does the VSR 2 hold?

22 pockets as standard, optionally expandable up to 180. The XTS magazine tower can be equipped with up to three chains for 60 tools each, with tools up to 400 mm long. The magazine can be loaded during machining, and the rotary table stays in position during tool changes.

05 Can the VSR 2 be automated?

Yes. AXA lists an optional robot interface with a lateral lifting door for fully automated loading, and shows the machine connected to an automated drawer system and to a pallet system. The magazine and changer are optionally available mirrored, so that one automation system can load two machines.
