Overview

The Anderson FUV-170 is the smallest 5-axis machining center in the FUV series, with a Ø170 mm (Ø6.7 in) trunnion table that carries 30 kg (66 lb). Travels are 360 mm (14.2 in) in X, 420 mm (16.5 in) in Y and 465 mm (18.3 in) in Z. Anderson describes it as an ultra-compact 5-axis solution for small precision parts.

The rotary axes are what stand out. Both are direct drive, and on this model they are fast: the A axis is listed at 100 rpm and the C axis at 250 rpm. The next size up, the FUV-250, lists 22.2 rpm and 33.3 rpm. On small parts machined in simultaneous 5-axis motion the rotary axes do most of the travelling, so those speeds decide the cycle time far more than the linear rapids do. A tilts from +30° to -120° and C rotates continuously, with a resolution of 0.001°.

The spindle matches the part size. It is an ISO 40 direct-drive unit at 12,000 rpm, with 15,000 listed as the alternative, and a 5.5/7.5 kW motor. That is a light motor for a 40-taper spindle, sized for small cutters in aluminum, brass, plastics and finishing passes in harder alloys, not for heavy roughing.

A table of this diameter suits watch-scale, dental and medical components, small impellers and connector bodies, held in a compact vise or collet fixture. The magazine holds 24 tools, with 30 and 36 listed, and changes in 1.55 sec tool-to-tool. Rapids are 36/36/36 m/min. The control is FANUC 0i-MF, and the machine weighs 4,500 kg (9,921 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Direct-drive rotary axes at 100 rpm on A and 250 rpm on C
  • A axis range of +30° to -120° with continuous C rotation at 0.001° resolution
  • Rapids of 36/36/36 m/min on the linear axes

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large a part fits the FUV-170?

The table is Ø170 mm (Ø6.7 in) with a maximum load of 30 kg (66 lb). Linear travels are 360 mm (14.2 in), 420 mm (16.5 in) and 465 mm (18.3 in), and the spindle nose to table distance is 15 ~ 480 mm (0.6 ~ 18.9 in). Part size is limited by swing over the trunnion as much as by travel, so check a tilted setup with Anderson.

02 How fast are the rotary axes of the FUV-170?

The A axis is listed at 100 rpm and the C axis at 250 rpm, both direct drive. Those are the highest rotary speeds in the series: the FUV-400, for example, lists 25 rpm on both axes. Resolution is 0.001°.

03 What spindle does the FUV-170 have?

An ISO 40 spindle with direct-drive transmission, 12,000 rpm as the base speed and 15,000 listed in brackets, and a 5.5/7.5 kW motor. Tools can be up to 250 mm (9.8 in) long and 7 kg (15 lb).

04 Which control does the FUV-170 use?

FANUC 0i-MF. Anderson lists TCP control, tilted working plane and collision avoidance among the 5-axis functions of the series, and describes the machine as capable of true simultaneous 5-axis machining.
