Overview
The Haas UMC-1500SS-DUO is the faster of Haas's two dual-station five-axis machines. It keeps the 60 × 20 × 20 in (1,524 × 508 × 508 mm) travels, the 19.7 in (500 mm) tilting platter and the 32 × 18 in (813 × 457 mm) table of the UMC-1500-Duo, and raises spindle speed to 12,000 rpm, rapids to 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) and the cutting feedrate to 833 ipm (21.2 m/min).
On a machine this long, rapid rate is not a detail. A program that works at both stations sends the spindle across much of the 60 in (1,524 mm) X travel every cycle, a move the UMC-1500-Duo makes at 900 ipm (22.9 m/min). The rotary axes are quick as well: B moves at 170°/sec through its +120° to -35° of tilt and C at 179°/sec through 360°. That shortens indexing on 3+2 jobs and gives simultaneous tool paths more usable feedrate.
Some things do not change with the SS badge. The spindle is rated 30 hp (22.4 kW) and 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm, so the extra speed helps small tools and aluminium, not heavy cuts. The tool changer is listed at 2.8 s tool-to-tool and 3.6 s chip-to-chip. The platter still carries 660 lb (300 kg) with a 27 in (686 mm) part swing, and the spindle nose is at most 24 in (610 mm) from it.
Anyone who wants these speeds but works on one large part at a time should compare the UMC-1250SS, which has 50 × 30 × 28 in (1,270 × 762 × 711 mm) travels and a 30 in (762 mm) platter rated for 1,000 lb (454 kg) at the same 12,000 rpm. Haas lists a starting price of US$311,995 for the UMC-1500SS-DUO, with a shipping weight of 20,100 lb (9,117 kg).
