Price estimate
We do not have a price for the AXA VPC 45 DASK that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Finishing moulds and free-form surfaces is a different job from roughing plate, and the AXA VPC 45 DASK is the VPC gantry built for it. In place of the fixed vertical spindle it carries a 2-axis fork head with an 18,000 rpm HSK A63 spindle. The whole head turns around the Z-axis (C-axis) from -360° to +360°, and the spindle tilts in the fork around the X-axis (A-axis) from -110° to +110°.
Both axes interpolate steplessly, so the tool can be tilted during the cut, and both have a hydraulic clamp for work in a fixed orientation. Indexing is 0.001°. AXA says guideways and drives of this version are designed for higher accelerations and travel speeds, and that a gantry elevation makes up for the height the fork head takes between its vertical and horizontal settings.
The numbers confirm that this is a finishing machine. The spindle is rated 130 Nm and 27 kW in S6 duty. Feed force is 3,000 N, a third of the 9,000 N of the three-axis VPC 45. Tools are limited to 60 mm in diameter and 250 mm in length, with no larger figure for free adjacent pockets.
Travels are 2,200 mm (86.6 in) in X, or 2,800 mm as an option, 1,500 mm in Y and 800 mm in Z. The fixed table is 1,500 mm wide and carries 1,500 kg, optionally 2,000 kg. With the spindle vertical the nose comes within 50 mm of the table; horizontal, the minimum is 360 mm. The magazine holds 22 tools, up to 90.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 2-axis fork head: C-axis -360° to +360° and A-axis -110° to +110°, both steplessly interpolating
- 18,000 rpm HSK A63 spindle for finishing with small tools
- Hydraulic clamping of the tilting axes for machining in a fixed orientation
- 0.001° indexing on the head axes
- Fixed table 1,500 mm wide, loadable by crane through the open covering
Limitations
- Feed force of 3,000 N rules out heavy roughing
- Tools limited to 60 mm in diameter and 250 mm in length
- Spindle torque of 130 Nm (S6)
- Horizontal spindle works no closer than 360 mm to the table
- No optional finer accuracy grade is listed: ± 0.015 mm positioning, ± 0.01 mm repeating

Frequently Asked Questions
01
AXA uses DASK as the name of the 2-axis tilting head and its spindle drive; the data sheet lists "DASK" as the standard drive. The page describes it as a double-axis tilting head for highly dynamic simultaneous 5-axis machining. The abbreviation itself is not spelled out in the English material.
02
The C-axis, on which the whole head turns around the Z-axis, covers -360° to +360°. The A-axis, on which the spindle tilts in the fork around the X-axis, covers -110° to +110°. Indexing is 0.001°, and both axes interpolate steplessly and can be clamped hydraulically.
03
The DASK spindle has a speed range of 18,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 130 Nm and a maximum power of 27 kW, both in S6 duty. The tool interface is HSK A63 to DIN 69893-1. No alternative drive is listed for this model.
04
The VPC 45 U is the 5-side machine for heavier cutting: a B-axis head on an SK 40 spindle with 143 Nm, a 9,000 N feed force and an NC rotary table for 2,000 kg. The VPC 45 DASK has no rotary table in its data sheet; both rotary axes are in the head, and its feed force is 3,000 N.
