Overview

The Zayer ALTEA is a gantry milling machine: the table and the cross beam are fixed, and the bridge travels over the work. Zayer's theme for it is floor space. With a fixed table the footprint does not have to allow for a table moving out at both ends, and X travel is listed from 4,000 and 5,000 mm up to 20,000 mm (787.4 in) and beyond.

Cross travel is 3,350 mm (131.9 in), with 3,850 or 4,350 mm (151.6 or 171.3 in) optional, between columns 2,750 mm (108.3 in) apart as standard. Vertical travel is 1,200 mm (47.2 in), or 1,500 mm (59.1 in). Tables are 2,000 mm (78.7 in) wide, with 2,500 or 3,000 mm (98.4 or 118.1 in) optional, and run from 4,500 mm to 20,500 mm (807.1 in).

The feed table is unusually detailed, one row per axis and per head family. The longitudinal axis, a rack with double motor and pinion, has a rapid feed of 30,000 mm/min (1,181 ipm) in either case. On the ball screw cross axis the figures are 30,000 mm/min (1,181 ipm) with a high torque head and 40,000 mm/min (1,575 ipm) with a high speed head; on the vertical axis, 32,000 and 41,000 mm/min (1,260 and 1,614 ipm). High torque heads run at 6,000 rpm on 30 kW (40.2 hp), 43 kW (57.7 hp) optional. High speed heads run at 18,000 rpm on 33 kW (44.3 hp).

The standard heads are a 45º head for high torque and a 30º head with electrospindle for high speed. Zayer marks the L shaped head as not available on the ALTEA, which is worth knowing if side-reach work is planned. Pendulum work, an operator's platform and change of heads are options. The magazine holds 30 tools, 40 or 60 as options, and Zayer adds that different tool magazine solutions are offered to reduce machining times.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Gantry layout that Zayer says reduces the need for floor space without giving up equipment
  • X travel from 4,000 mm to 20,000 mm (787.4 in) and beyond
  • High speed version: 18,000 rpm with 40,000 mm/min (1,575 ipm) cross and 41,000 mm/min (1,614 ipm) vertical rapid feed
  • Pendulum work and an operator's platform are available as options
  • Per-axis rapid and working feeds are published for both head families

Limitations

  • The L shaped head is marked as not available
  • Vertical travel is limited to 1,200 mm (47.2 in), or 1,500 mm (59.1 in) as an option
  • Tool magazine options stop at 60 tools
  • No table load or machine weight is published
  • Change of heads is an option, where the THERA has it as standard

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long is the X travel of the Zayer ALTEA?

Zayer lists longitudinal travel starting at 4,000 and 5,000 mm and continuing to 20,000 mm (787.4 in), with an ellipsis after it, so longer machines are built. Table length follows it, from 4,500 mm to 20,500 mm (807.1 in). The axis is driven by a rack with a double motor and pinion.

02 How fast does the ALTEA move?

Rapid feed is 30,000 mm/min (1,181 ipm) on the longitudinal axis. On the cross axis it is 30,000 mm/min (1,181 ipm) with a high torque head and 40,000 mm/min (1,575 ipm) with a high speed head. On the vertical axis it is 32,000 mm/min (1,260 ipm) and 41,000 mm/min (1,614 ipm). Working feeds are 25,000 to 36,000 mm/min depending on axis and head.

03 Which heads does the ALTEA take?

High torque: a 45º head as standard, with a continuous-rotation 45º head, a 30º head and a direct outlet head as options. High speed: a 30º head with electrospindle as standard, and a 40º head with a 42 kW, 15,000 rpm electrospindle as an option. The L shaped head is marked not available.

04 What is the difference between the ALTEA and the ALTEA W?

The cross beam. On the ALTEA it is fixed, and Zayer gives the maximum distance from table to spindle nose as 1,765 mm (69.5 in) with a high torque head and 1,565 mm (61.6 in) with a high speed head. The ALTEA W adds a moving cross beam with 900 mm (35.4 in) of displacement.

05 How many tools does the ALTEA magazine hold?

30 tools as standard, with 40 or 60 as options. Zayer mentions different tool magazine solutions intended to reduce machining times. Chip conveyor and coolant tank are standard equipment.
