Overview

A part that fills the AWEA MVP-7040 will spend many hours on the table, and most of the gain on such a job comes from not stopping: no re-clamping, no manual tool loading, no head change by crane. The machine has 7,000 mm (275.6 in) of X travel, 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of Y and a 7,020 x 3,010 mm (276.4 x 118.5 in) table, and its tooling system is laid out for long unattended sequences.

The magazine holds 60 tools on a BT 50 taper. Each can be up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 20 kg (44 lb), with diameter listed as Ø127 / Ø215 mm (Ø5.0 / Ø8.5 in). According to AWEA the servo magazine can change a tool with the spindle vertical or horizontal, wherever the cross rail happens to be on its W axis. On a machine whose rail moves at 3 m/min (118 ipm), not having to send the rail to a fixed change height saves real time on every exchange.

Five faces are reached through the horizontal spindle head, which a curvic coupling positions in 5° increments (72 positions). A Five Sided Coordinate Conversion System is standard on the FANUC Oi-MD control, so one work offset serves the top and the sides.

Length shows in the X axis. Rapid traverse there is 7.5 m/min (295 ipm), while Y and Z run at 10 m/min (394 ipm). Table load is 20,000 kg (44,092 lb), VDI positioning accuracy is P = 0.040 mm over full travel, and the machine weighs 93,500 kg (206,129 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 60-tool servo magazine that changes tools vertically or horizontally at any W-axis position
  • Tools up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 20 kg (44 lb)
  • Standard Five Sided Coordinate Conversion System with the FANUC Oi-MD control
  • 7,020 x 3,010 mm (276.4 x 118.5 in) table between columns 3,500 mm (137.8 in) apart
  • Horizontal head indexing in 5° increments (72 positions)

Limitations

  • X rapid of 7.5 m/min (295 ipm), the slowest rate in the series
  • Horizontal spindle speed tops out at 3,000 rpm, against 4,000 rpm vertically
  • Head positions are fixed 5° steps; faces at other angles need the optional universal or 35° angular head
  • 93,500 kg (206,129 lb) machine weight, against 85,000 kg (187,390 lb) for the MVP-7032
06

Best For

Long multi-tool cycles on large castings and weldments Parts with many drilled and tapped holes on four side faces Workpieces up to 7,000 mm long and wider than a 2,400 mm (94.5 in) table allows Heavy cutters up to 20 kg (44 lb) on BT 50

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Where does the MVP-7040 change tools?

AWEA states that the servo tool magazine can horizontally or vertically change tools at any position in the W axis. The cross rail does not need to return to one height first, and tools for the horizontal head are exchanged automatically like those for the vertical spindle. The table lists the capacity as 60 T.

02 What are the tool size limits?

Maximum tool length is 400 mm (15.7 in) and maximum tool weight is 20 kg (44 lb). Maximum diameter is given as Ø127 / Ø215 mm (Ø5.0 / Ø8.5 in). The spindle taper is BT 50. Check long boring bars against the 400 mm limit before planning them into an automatic cycle.

03 At what angles can the horizontal head be set?

The curvic coupling provides 5° increments, 72 positions in all. For surfaces that do not fall on a 5° step, AWEA offers optional heads: an extension head, a 35° angular head and a universal head.

04 How does the MVP-7040 compare with the MVP-6040 and MVP-8040?

The MVP-6040 has 6,000 mm (236.2 in) of X travel, a 10 m/min (394 ipm) X rapid and P = 0.035 mm VDI positioning accuracy, with the same 20,000 kg (44,092 lb) table load. The MVP-8040 has 8,000 mm (315.0 in) of X travel and is printed with a 25,000 kg (55,115 lb) load and 122,000 kg (268,959 lb) of weight. The MVP-7040 is listed at 7.5 m/min (295 ipm), P = 0.040 mm and 93,500 kg (206,129 lb).
