Overview

The Reiden RX18 is the largest machine in Reiden's RX range: a 5-axis machining center with 2,200 mm (86.6 in) of travel in both X and Y, 1,610 mm (63.4 in) in Z and a weight of 52,000 kg (114,638 lb). It was also the first of the range to turn. Reiden's history lists the RX18 for 2011 as its first 5-axis machining center with turning function, and a fully automatic pallet change system with turning function followed in 2015.

What the envelope is for shows in the table rows. Maximum rotary diameter is 2,200 / 2,600 mm, the milling table measures Ø 1,800 x 1,400 mm and the turning table Ø 1,800 mm. A large ring or housing can be turned and then milled on the same pallet instead of travelling between machines. Turning relies on the clamped spindle and an optional rotary table; Reiden quotes a maximum of 400 rpm and adds 250 rpm in brackets without explaining it.

Spindle taper is HSK 100, and the automatic swiveling head, horizontal / vertical, is standard. Reiden calls it a trigonal head, with the A axis listed as +/- 105°. The main drive is rated 94 / 113 kW and 14,000 rpm with 300 / 410 Nm. For heavier cutting there is a DDT drive, Reiden's patented spindle drive concept, with 105 / 125 kW, 3,000 rpm and 844 / 1,202 Nm. A second DDT entry lists 63 / 75 kW and 200 / 275 Nm.

Magazines hold 92 / 144 / 264 / 371 tools, up to 600 / 900 / 1,200 mm long and 125 / 250 / 500 mm in diameter. One figure runs against expectation. Pallet load is 4,000 kg (8,818 lb), below the 4,500 kg of the smaller RX14, so check the load case when fixtures are heavy. Pallets are Ø 1,800 x 1,400 / Ø 1,800 mm, in systems of 2, 3 or 4 or with linear storage. With dimensions of 5,550 x 7,301 x 4,766 mm, hall height and crane clearance need checking early.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X and Y travel of 2,200 mm (86.6 in) each, with 1,610 mm (63.4 in) of Z
  • Maximum rotary diameter of 2,200 / 2,600 mm and a Ø 1,800 mm turning table
  • Main drive with 94 / 113 kW and 14,000 rpm, plus a DDT drive delivering 844 / 1,202 Nm at 3,000 rpm
  • Tool magazines of 92 / 144 / 264 / 371 places, the largest count printed for any RX machine
  • HSK 100 taper with tools up to 1,200 mm long and 500 mm in diameter
  • Automation that needs no additional master computer, from 2 pallets up to linear storage

Limitations

  • Pallet load of 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) is lower than the 4,500 kg listed for the RX14
  • A weight of 52,000 kg (114,638 lb) and a height of 4,766 mm rule out many existing halls and foundations
  • The rotary table for turning is optional, and the table prints no turning torque
  • The high-torque DDT drive stops at 3,000 rpm, so one spindle won't cover both heavy roughing and high-speed finishing

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big a part can the Reiden RX18 machine?

Travels are 2,200 mm (86.6 in) in X and in Y and 1,610 mm (63.4 in) in Z. The maximum rotary diameter is listed as 2,200 / 2,600 mm, the milling table as Ø 1,800 x 1,400 mm and the turning table as Ø 1,800 mm. On the pallet changer the load limit is 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) per pallet.

02 What spindle options does the RX18 have?

The taper is HSK 100. The main drive is listed with 94 / 113 kW, 14,000 rpm and 300 / 410 Nm. A DDT drive offers 105 / 125 kW, 3,000 rpm and 844 / 1,202 Nm for heavy cutting, and a second DDT entry lists 63 / 75 kW with 200 / 275 Nm. Reiden describes DDT as its patented spindle drive concept.

03 Is turning standard on the RX18?

No. Reiden's wording is that workpieces can be turned with the spindle clamping and the optional rotary table, at a maximum speed of 400 rpm (250 rpm in brackets). The turning table is Ø 1,800 mm. The RX18 was launched in 2011 as Reiden's first 5-axis machining center with turning function.

04 How heavy and how large is the RX18?

Machine weight is 52,000 kg (114,638 lb). The dimensions are printed as 5,550 x 7,301 x 4,766 mm for length x width x height. The RX14 is listed at 42,000 kg, so the step up in travel comes with a much heavier installation; foundation, hall height and transport route should be settled before ordering.

05 Which controls and pallet systems are offered on the RX18?

Reiden lists the Heidenhain TNC7 and the Siemens Sinumerik One. Pallet systems come in sizes of 2 / 3 / 4 or as linear storage, with pallets of Ø 1,800 x 1,400 mm or Ø 1,800 mm. Reiden says the automation does not require an additional master computer and that the machine can be expanded from the standard 2-table changer.
