Overview

The SNK CMV is a column-moving 5-axis vertical machining center designed for medium to large workpieces that require full 5-axis simultaneous capability. SNK positions the CMV for shops machining aerospace components, die and mold work, and general industrial parts in the size range between standard VMCs and the company's massive gantry machines. The column-moving design means the workpiece remains stationary on the fixed table while the column traverses in X and Z, providing excellent dynamic stability on heavy parts.

The 5-axis head provides continuous A/C axis rotation for full simultaneous 5-axis machining of complex contoured surfaces. X-axis travels typically range from 2,000 to 4,000 mm depending on configuration, with Y-axis travel of 1,500 to 2,500 mm and Z-axis of 800 to 1,200 mm. This envelope handles wing ribs, door frames, structural fittings, and medium-sized mold cavities that are too large for standard 5-axis VMCs but do not require the full-gantry treatment of the HGM series.

The spindle options reflect the CMV's versatility across materials. A 12,000 RPM / 30 kW spindle serves as the standard for steel and titanium work, while 20,000 and 30,000 RPM high-speed options are available for high-speed aluminum machining in aerospace applications. The HSK-A63 spindle interface balances rigidity with the tool variety needed for complex multi-operation parts. The 60-tool standard ATC (expandable to 120) keeps tool changes fast and supports unattended runs on parts requiring many different cutters.

SNK's column-moving architecture gives the CMV a structural advantage over C-frame VMCs on heavy cuts. Because the table does not move with the workpiece, there is no degradation of positioning accuracy due to workpiece mass. This matters when machining heavy steel or titanium forgings where workpiece weight can approach the table's rated capacity. The fixed table also simplifies fixturing and allows permanent fixtures for production work without concern about dynamic load effects.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Column-moving design maintains positioning accuracy regardless of workpiece weight, critical for heavy titanium and steel parts
  • Scalable travel configuration from 2 to 4 meters X-axis covers a broad range of medium-large part sizes
  • Continuous 5-axis head with +/-100 degree A-axis provides full access to complex aerospace and mold surfaces
  • Fixed table simplifies fixturing and supports permanent production fixtures without dynamic load concerns
  • Multiple spindle speed options from 12,000 to 30,000 RPM span heavy metal cutting to high-speed aluminum machining
  • 10,000 kg table capacity handles heavy forgings and castings that would challenge standard VMC platforms

Limitations

  • Column-moving design requires more floor space than an equivalent C-frame VMC due to the column's travel range behind the table
  • Price range of $800K-$2M is a significant investment compared to standard 5-axis VMCs
  • Machine weight of 25,000-40,000 kg requires foundation engineering and limits installation flexibility
  • SNK's service network is oriented toward aerospace and heavy industry centers, potentially slow in other regions
  • Longer lead times compared to stock 5-axis machines from higher-volume manufacturers

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does an SNK CMV cost?

SNK CMV machines typically price between $800,000 and $2,000,000 depending on travel configuration, spindle options, and automation. Smaller 2-meter X-travel configurations with standard spindles start near $800K, while larger 4-meter configurations with high-speed spindles approach $2M.

02 What is the advantage of a column-moving design?

In a column-moving design, the workpiece stays fixed on the table while the column moves. This means workpiece weight does not affect positioning accuracy or dynamic performance. On a moving-table machine, heavy workpieces create inertia that can reduce accuracy during rapid direction changes.

03 How does the CMV compare to the SNK HGM-5?

The CMV is a smaller, more versatile 5-axis machine for parts in the 2-4 meter range, while the HGM-5 is a full gantry machine for parts up to 20 meters. The CMV costs significantly less and requires less floor space, making it appropriate for shops that do not need the HGM's extreme travel capabilities.

04 Can the CMV machine titanium effectively?

Yes. The column-moving rigidity, 30 kW spindle power, and HSK-A63 tooling make the CMV capable of aggressive titanium machining. SNK machines are used extensively in aerospace for titanium structural components where cutting forces are high and rigidity is essential.

05 What controls are available?

The CMV is available with either Fanuc 31i-B5 or Siemens SINUMERIK 840D sl controls. Both support simultaneous 5-axis interpolation, NURBS surface machining, and high-speed surface control functions. Control choice typically depends on the shop's existing programming infrastructure.
