Overview
The Brother Speedio U500Xd2 is a compact 5-axis machining center that brings full simultaneous 5-axis capability to the Speedio platform. It combines the high-speed DNA of the Speedio line with a trunnion-style rotary tilting table (A/C axes) for true 5-axis contouring of complex parts.
X/Y/Z travels are 500 x 400 x 305 mm with the A-axis providing +30/-120 degrees of tilt and C-axis delivering 360-degree continuous rotation. The spindle runs at 16,000 rpm with 7.5 kW on BT30 taper. The 21-tool turret delivers 0.9-second chip-to-chip changes.
Rapids reach 50 m/min on X/Y, 56 m/min on Z. The trunnion table accepts workpieces up to approximately 300 mm diameter and 200 mm height. Positioning accuracy +/- 0.004 mm, repeatability +/- 0.002 mm.
Weight is approximately 4,500 kg with a footprint of 1,650 x 2,340 mm. The CNC-C00 control handles full 5-axis simultaneous interpolation natively. Brother offers optional touch probe and tool measurement systems.
The U500Xd2 competes with the DMG Mori DMU 40, Haas UMC-500, and Hermle C 250 but at a significantly lower price point and with much faster tool changes. The trade-off is BT30 vs BT40/HSK tooling.
New machines price $160,000-$220,000. Used trade $80,000-$140,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Full 5-axis simultaneous capability at a fraction of the cost of traditional 5-axis VMCs
- 0.9-second turret tool change is dramatically faster than any competitor in 5-axis
- Compact footprint makes it one of the smallest true 5-axis machines available
- BT30 enables high-speed aluminum and non-ferrous machining
- CNC-C00 handles 5-axis interpolation natively without add-on packages
- Significantly lower acquisition cost than DMG Mori, Hermle, or Matsuura 5-axis machines
Limitations
- BT30 spindle limits cutting forces -- not for heavy 5-axis titanium or Inconel work
- A-axis range of +30/-120 degrees is more restricted than some competitors offering +/- 120
- 21-tool turret may not be enough for complex 5-axis jobs requiring many tools
- Workpiece size limited to approximately 300mm diameter on the trunnion
- Brother service network for 5-axis machines is less established than for standard Speedios

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New $160,000-$220,000. Used $80,000-$140,000. Significantly less than traditional 5-axis VMCs.
02
Yes, the CNC-C00 control supports full 5-axis simultaneous interpolation for contouring work.
03
Any major CAM package supporting 5-axis (Mastercam, Fusion 360, NX, etc.) can post to the CNC-C00 control.
04
The U500Xd2 has much faster tool changes (0.9s vs ~5s) and is more compact, but the UMC-500 has a CAT40 spindle with more cutting power.
05
Approximately 300mm diameter and 200mm height on the trunnion table.
