Modig MTX — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Modig MTX that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Modig or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The Modig MTX is a vertical single-spindle 5-axis machining center offered in four travel sizes, from 1,200 x 1,300 x 1,000 mm (47.2 x 51.2 x 39.4 in) to 3,000 x 2,000 x 1,700 mm (118 x 78.7 x 67 in) in X, Y and Z. The two sizes in between are 1,600 x 1,600 x 1,200 mm (63 x 63 x 47.2 in) and 2,200 x 1,600 x 1,500 mm (86.6 x 63 x 59 in). The travel rows list their values in the same order, and these combinations assume the first X value goes with the first Y and Z values, and so on down the row.

Part capacity is given as upper limits for the range: a swing diameter of up to 3,000 mm (118 in), part height up to 1,950 mm (76.8 in) and part weight up to 8,500 kg (18,739 lbs). Because they are 'up to' figures, assume they describe the largest size. Anyone looking at one of the three smaller machines should ask for the swing, height and weight of that size.

Rotary motion is listed as an A-axis of -45/+135 degrees and a B-axis of -15/+195 degrees, with a C-axis of +/- 360 degrees. A and B feed at 0-300 degrees/sec and accelerate at 6.5 rad/s². The C-axis has two speed ratings: up to 300 degrees/sec for milling and up to 3,000 degrees/sec for turning. That second figure sets the MTX apart from a plain 5-axis mill, because the C-axis can rotate fast enough for turning operations alongside milling.

The spindle is listed at up to 30,000 rpm and up to 150 kW (201 hp) S1, with HSK-A63, HSK-A63/80 or HSK-A100 interfaces. No torque figure is given, and the 'up to' wording means the speed and power maxima may belong to different spindle choices. Magazines hold 60, 120, 240 or 360 tools. Linear axes feed at 0-60 m/min (0-2,400 in/min) with 7 m/s² (23 ft/s²) of acceleration.

Within Modig's range the IM-8 covers smaller work on an 800 mm (31 in) diameter trunnion table rated for 850 kg (1,874 lbs); the MTX part weight limit of up to 8,500 kg (18,739 lbs) is ten times that.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Four travel sizes, from 1,200 x 1,300 x 1,000 mm (47.2 x 51.2 x 39.4 in) up to 3,000 x 2,000 x 1,700 mm (118 x 78.7 x 67 in)
  • Part weight up to 8,500 kg (18,739 lbs) and swing diameter up to 3,000 mm (118 in)
  • C-axis rated up to 3,000 degrees/sec for turning as well as up to 300 degrees/sec for milling
  • Spindle choices reach up to 30,000 rpm and up to 150 kW (201 hp) S1, on HSK-A63, HSK-A63/80 or HSK-A100
  • Tool magazine in four sizes: 60, 120, 240 or 360 tools
  • Linear feed of 0-60 m/min (0-2,400 in/min) with 7 m/s² (23 ft/s²) acceleration, on a range that reaches 3,000 mm (118 in) of X

Limitations

  • No spindle torque figure is listed, so low-speed cutting capacity cannot be judged from the table
  • Swing, part height and part weight are 'up to' values for the range; the limits of the three smaller sizes are not stated
  • No tool change time, tool length or tool weight limit appears in the table
  • The two middle sizes share 1,600 mm (63 in) of Y, so stepping from 1,600 mm (63 in) to 2,200 mm (86.6 in) of X adds no Y travel
  • The table gives both an A-axis and a B-axis range without saying how the two are combined on one machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What sizes does the Modig MTX come in?

Four. X travel is 1,200, 1,600, 2,200 or 3,000 mm (47.2, 63, 86.6 or 118 in). Y travel is 1,300, 1,600, 1,600 or 2,000 mm (51.2, 63, 63 or 78.7 in). Z travel is 1,000, 1,200, 1,500 or 1,700 mm (39.4, 47.2, 59 or 67 in). The rows list the sizes in the same order, so the smallest machine is read as 1,200 x 1,300 x 1,000 mm and the largest as 3,000 x 2,000 x 1,700 mm.

02 How heavy and how large a part can the MTX take?

Modig lists part weight up to 8,500 kg (18,739 lbs), part height up to 1,950 mm (76.8 in) and swing diameter up to 3,000 mm (118 in). These are maxima for the range. The smallest size has 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of X travel, so expect its limits to be lower; the table does not give them per size.

03 Can the MTX turn as well as mill?

The C-axis row gives two speeds: up to 300 degrees/sec for milling and up to 3,000 degrees/sec for turning, over a range of +/- 360 degrees. Turning is therefore part of the listed capability. The table has no separate turning torque or workholding figures, so those need to come from Modig for a given part.

04 What spindle and tool interface options are listed?

Speed up to 30,000 rpm and power up to 150 kW (201 hp) S1. The interface is HSK-A63, HSK-A63/80 or HSK-A100. Torque is not listed, and the table does not say which interface goes with which speed or power, so ask for the complete rating of the spindle being quoted.

05 How does the MTX differ from the Modig IM-8?

Scale, mainly. The IM-8 has an 800 mm (31 in) diameter A/C trunnion table with an 850 kg (1,874 lbs) load limit, and its standard spindle is 24,000 rpm with 50 kW (68 hp) S1. The MTX is a vertical machine listed for parts up to 8,500 kg (18,739 lbs), with spindles of up to 30,000 rpm and up to 150 kW (201 hp) S1. The IM-8 holds 60 tools standard and up to 300 as an option, while the MTX offers 60, 120, 240 or 360.

06 How fast do the MTX axes move?

X, Y and Z feed at 0-60 m/min (0-2,400 in/min) and accelerate at 7 m/s² (23 ft/s²). The A and B axes feed at 0-300 degrees/sec with 6.5 rad/s² of acceleration. The C-axis reaches up to 300 degrees/sec in milling and up to 3,000 degrees/sec in turning.
