Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fryer 5X-160 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
With 160 in (4,064 mm) of X travel the Fryer 5X-160 is the largest 5-axis machine in the 5X series. It has the box way frame and 55 hp (41.0 kW) peak spindle of the 5X-120 on a longer bed: a 40 x 165 in (1,016 x 4,191 mm) table, 50 in (1,270 mm) of Y, 40 in (1,016 mm) of Z and a 2-axis head with +/- 105° of A travel.
On parts this long the articulating head is less a convenience than a necessity. Nobody tilts a 160 in workpiece. Rail and aircraft structural members, large moulds and patterns, wind and oil field components are set down once, and every angled face, port and pocket is reached by rotating the spindle. Fryer notes the accessibility for crane loading, and the door opens 165 in (4,191 mm), the full length of the table.
Table load is 8,500 lb (3,856 kg), the highest in the series. The working height under the spindle is the same as on the 5X-120, 0 - 32.5 in (0 - 826 mm) with the head vertical. Rapids are 400 ipm (10.2 m/min), so on scattered features the cycle is dominated by positioning; the cutting feed rate itself goes to 800 ipm (20.3 m/min).
Rotary accuracy does not depend on the bed length. The A and C axes position to 5 seconds of arc with 3 seconds of arc repeatability, and the linear axes to +/- 0.0002 in (0.0051 mm). The machine weighs 37,000 lb (16,783 kg), needs 300 x 135 in (7,620 x 3,429 mm) of floor and a 125 A supply at 380-500 VAC.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
X is 160 in (4,064 mm), Y is 50 in (1,270 mm) and Z is 40 in (1,016 mm). The head adds A travel of +/- 105° and C travel of +/- 200°. Fryer's series page describes the head as providing 360° of rotation and 200° of spindle tilt.
02
In Fryer's table, largely yes. The 5X-120 has 120 in (3,048 mm) of X, a 40 x 126 in (1,016 x 3,200 mm) table for 7,500 lb (3,402 kg) and weighs 34,000 lb (15,422 kg). The 5X-160 has the longer bed, 8,500 lb (3,856 kg) of table load and weighs 37,000 lb (16,783 kg). Spindle, head, ways and thrust are the same.
03
An HSK-63A spindle, 200 - 15,000 rpm, 55 hp (41.0 kW) peak with 90 ft-lb (122 Nm) at 2,000 rpm, fed by a 40-station arm type changer with a 3 seconds tool change. A 350 psi coolant through spindle system is on the options sheet.
04
The options sheet lists a dual chip auger system and a dual chip conveyor system for machines with 100" - 160" of X travel. The coolant tank holds 100 gal (379 L).
